About You
Had extensive training during the first week and then got put onto a project for the 3 weeks after that. Had a really good team of grads to work with and my performance manager was very supportive. We also received a budget for lunch each day which helped me financially.
I was trusted with doing the jobs that the grads were doing after the first week on the project. My performance manager was also speaking to me regularly and giving me praise when I was doing well. I was also regularly being asked how the placement was going for me and if there was anything I was concerned about.
Received a lot of training during the first week on many things such as advanced excel, SQL, python, presentation skills and also intro sessions on the different aspects of the project. The presentation skills training session was very useful because we were not taught what to say, but more about our body language and how that can affect our confidence.
Mainly my presentation and excel skills. For my course I deal with a lot of data so being able to organise those better will be very useful. Also the skills I learnt from working in a professional environment will help me later on in life as well with future placements and jobs.
The Company
Very well, the training sessions were well organised and so were all the events that the interns were involved with as well. I was quite fortunate because the part of the project I was working on had quite a lot to do, but other interns I spoke to had hardly anything to do for their projects because it was either to complex for them to get taught it, or there just wasn't anything to do.
Great atmosphere, the grads who I worked with were very friendly and we all had good fun working on the project. It was not too intense with the people higher up in the project either, everyone is very approachable which gives a better opportunity to network during the working day and also as socials.
We were working alongside graduates and doing the same jobs as them, so we knew exactly what it would be like if we had a full time role at KPMG. We were also encouraged to book rooms and set meetings which is what we would have to do if we were working there which was good practice.
As a Mechanical Engineering student, it was a very valuable insight into the financial services industry and also provided me with very useful contacts. Working in Technology Consulting has allowed me to see that I liked the consulting side of it, so that is what I am going to be concentrating on when looking for future placements and jobs.
Everything Else
Payed monthly and was reimbursed my train ticket cost on the first day. We had to claim the money back using the same system that the employees use to claim money back as well so it was good practice to use that for if we would return back to KPMG.
We were encouraged to talk to senior people on the team and even suggest to go out for coffee. There were many socials and a few leaving drinks for people. These were also a good opportunity to network. The project room was very sociable so you could just up to people you didn't know and talk to them about what they do.
There were various team building exercises if you were on the graduate scheme. It was also mentioned that KPMG offer a ski trip that anyone can go on. A few of the graduates meet up with each other and go on nights out, showed me that there was more than a work relationship between the employees.
