    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I received a lot of support from the team around me and all the people I met through them. I also really valued having a buddy assigned to me who could help me with some problems I ran into. However, I did not feel like I had enough to do, sometimes I had an entire day that was full of work, often times though I had nothing to do for half a day or so.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They seemed to really value my input and sought to include me in as many projects as they could put me on. They were always very grateful when I was trying to help out with the workload.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My Line Manager was a fantastic coach and some of the tips he gave me, I will keep in mind for the rest of my professional career. He also taught me a lot about how business life is outside of our department, since he has held many positions both inside and outside of the bank. My direct colleagues were also very helpful and would provide me with valuable feedback. And they were always there for me to ask questions, which was just a great experience.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Overall, I think I could have held two of these positions and still managed to finish everything within the 9-5 rhythm.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a couple of presentations to do which I had to present to people from outside of the department as well, and I got the chance to attend meetings on behalf of my team in Manchester. This was a good experience and I felt very much valued and trusted.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Like I mentioned before, the team and especially my line Manager gave me a lot of tips on how I could improve in a couple of ways, such as presentation and people skills. I also received a lot of useful feedback with regards to report writing and pitching, both of which I will need later on in life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was absolutely fantastic. Relaxed and fun when it could be, but also serious and quiet when needed. I really valued it, although it took me a little bit to get used to the fun in an office environment, but in the end you learn fast.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was organised almost perfectly, sometimes the systems just wouldn't work but I don't think I can really hold anyone responsible for that. I just wish the team were a bit more informed of how much work we could actually do, since in Uni we also have to work hard. So our workload could definitely be quite a bit higher.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a lot of learning available to me, both in person and online. And they were also easily accessible, since we were required to do some of the e-learnings in our first week, so we knew they were available. Then also the Determined to Lead programme was easy to access and there was a lot of information on there.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think RBS is great as an organization, since there are such a wide variety of different roles. They also offer competitive pay and flexible working hours.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everyone seems to have the same interpretation. Everyone is very open to conversation and is genuinely excited to talk about what they do. Social wise, everyone enjoyed just taking a couple of minutes every morning to see what people had been up to.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I study in Manchester, so I had my apartment over summer, therefore I can't really comment on the cost of living, just that it is a lot cheaper than London. Same goes for the cost of socializing, much lower than London so there were a lot more opportunities to go out and socialize with the other interns or colleagues

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Manchester is quite a big city so there is always something to sink your teeth into, and RBS offers a lot of opportunities for its employees on top of that.
