    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed my internship very much as I was able to work on a variety of different projects concerning the future of medicine in relation to cancer treatments. That was a very enjoyable experience as I was able to explore a variety of topics. In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed working with my colleagues of whom were incredibly supportive and hard-working in that they would always contribute towards tasks and always had high morale.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt incredibly valued by Cancer Research as they always wanted to give me feedback through improving my reports and helping me analyse complex data and equations. In addition, the line managers were always available in helping me to finalise data and go over any grammatical errors. In addition, I was also valued for helping teach incoming volunteers to the local shops as well through encouragement and praise.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I received a lot of guidance from the line managers especially of whom were always available even beyond induction week where we were given loads of information. In addition, we received training on how to use software such as EPSS on dissecting data alongside learning how to use medical journals.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It assisted me more within the skills department especially concerning the arena of research. I was able to improve my data collection skills especially when it came to both my own primary data in using EPSS alongside analysing existing medical data. In addition, through doing a plethora of reports I was able to develop my analytical skills in being able to use evidence to back up my arguments.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight programme was very structured in that we were given timetables which outlined what we had to do during our time there. These timetable were good in offering flexibility as we had a few hours of rest which we could devote our time to other tasks. The timetables also had a variety of different projects that needed to be completed which was good for me as I was able to experience a wide range of things that Cancer Research does. This made my work more enjoyable and not mundane.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was incredibly positive as everyone was really friendly as morale was always high. In addition because we had a range of tasks to do, the atmosphere was never dull but always filled with activity, but at the same time was never rushed or chaotic. Finally, we also had good breaks which allowed for socialising and catching up on other things with colleagues which then allowed me to develop long-lasting friendships with colleagues.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Cancer Research invested a lot of time and energy into the development of their attendees in the insight programme. We were given an induction in getting to grips with the scheme and what we had to do. Alongside this, we also had workshops throughout the insight programme which were very helpful for trouble-shooting and going over any difficult ideas. Finally we were also trained in using EPSS (the basics) in how to analyse secondary and primary data as well.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It gave some indication as to what we would be doing full-time in regards to what people do generally within the company. However, it wasn't job specific but it gave a general sense of the various roles within the charity, which was good preparation for people who want to go down a particular path.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • It was specific but we got a sense of what it would be like to work at Cancer Research UK in their offices more so than their charity shops in dealing with the admin and reports side of things. The company culture overall at Cancer Research was very pleasurable and not hectic which allowed for a more relaxing and friendly environment which at the same time was not dull.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It was very valuable in that it offered me a clear insight in what I want to do, as I am incredibly interested in the region of research and the study of cancer. It also gave a sense of purpose in that the research is useful for both medicinal purpose in antibiotics alongside advising public policy as well. My own personal career is very much centred around that.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were paid for the insight, which was very good as it allowed me to study and work at the same time which allowed for a work-life balance. You could get paid travel reimbursements but because I cycled, I wasn't eligible however the office wasn't far from where I worked and we were also given a bonus based on our performance each week which was very incentivising.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, we would have a few networking events especially with the senior managers and people higher up within Cancer Research UK, in giving us an idea of what they do and how they got to where they are now. It was very useful in establishing connections with people which was very insightful in allowing me to sense of what I could be doing in the charity as well.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • They were very good in that the senior managers were very truthful about their experiences and didn't sugarcoat at all which I really liked. In addition, they gave us an insight in how to apply for the higher position or move to a different department within the charity which was helpful in giving a well rounded overview of how to apply for positions from within the charity as well.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I found out through overhearing conversations between other people and through email as well which advertised weekly newsletters of what is happening within the company and was also available to members from the general public. There were a plethora of different activities which catered to a variety of individual needs.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes I would, especially to those who are interested in working in the third sector, as it broadens your understanding of charities in that there a lot of opportunities in the organisation which aren't always advertised. It also gives you a sense of purpose in that Cancer Research UK helps through it's research to improve cancer treatments alongside public policy on health as well which was an eye opener for me.
