    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • A really good placement with many other students and so a good atmosphere.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • We had lab meetings to discuss results, and my results were always taken into account as much as anyone else.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I needed to ask a question I could, whether that be about lab work or office work and so I never felt out of my depth

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy, but this was good as I was able to make the most out of every day and it also made time go really fast!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was left alone after I'd gotten to grips with things, to carry out my own experiments and so I learnt to be independent and this also gave me the flexibility to carry out the lab work when I wanted

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I want to continue with a science career, the skills I learnt at GSK in the lab are skills that will be really valuable for me in future careers and the writing skills of having to write a placement report, are really assisting me with my final year project report.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a good balance between silent times when it was good to get on with work, or big office chats about the apprentice! It was a very friendly atmosphere.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • GSK are used to having students so they know what to expect from us and therefore know how to deal with us.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • GSK didn't really invest in me, but by being able to learn lab techniques I feel that I've had personal training and have developed as a scientist in the lab.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Unfortunately in R&D, GSK do not have a graduate scheme and do not employ you until you have a PhD, but if I wanted to move into another area of the company I'm sure there'd be a greater opportunity than if I hadn't worked for them at all.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were often parties and nights out with the other students at weekends as there were so many other students working at the same site

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The rent in Stevenage was about average, not overly expensive but about equivalent to other places. Socialising was an equivalent too, not more expensive than anywhere else.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were some nice bars and pubs, but the clubs could have done with some work!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were sporting events and clubs that took place outside of work.

    4/5
