    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was not in my favoured discipline - however I loved the placement so this did not matter as I got really stuck into the project.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I don't know what GSK would do without IP students, however sometimes in project meetings regarding my work my supervisor would be addressed more than myself.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor and line manager were very supportive. At the start of the year I was concerned that I would not know how to plan my work, but it all fell into place.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start there was lots of office work to be done which was boring, but by the end I was very busy. It depends how many experiments you have done and if you've had time to write them up. I know other student colleagues of mine were often bored though.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are the go-to person for that area of research for the project, so quite a lot.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I believe the skills I learnt both in the lab and presentation/report writing wise will stay with me through my scientific career. Hopefully potential recruiters will also like it on my CV

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Our office was very friendly

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Good set-up and support network for students

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Nothing out of the ordinary, just general training needed to do the job

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Think it will be hard to get a job there without a PhD

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everyone was great, we made a large group of friends and had lots of nights out

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Stevenage is pretty dull, but near to London which is handy. I feel like landlords just want to rip you off though

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bar and Beyond - shocking, but fun if you're all there

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • GSK Unite Students existed, but didn't get too involved as it was effort to go in London

    3/5
