The Role
The placement was not very enjoyable, there was a poor workload and the work I received was really repetitive and boring.
Most of my work was conducted individually, but colleagues did help when I had questions or concerns.
Poor support from my line manager, I would take concerns to him about my work load and the interest of the work and very little was done to find work that was not a short task and that was interesting enough. However saying that, the line manger did help with an external matter for which I am very grateful for.
Not very busy at all, I had to drag work out just to get through the day.
Very little responsibility, given I wasn't on the need to know list or my security clearance wasn't high enough, I felt I was given very little involvement in projects and I was unable to see why my work was important.
I can thankful say I at least further developed my MATLAB skills from the work I undertook. I also learnt through observation what not to do if I ever become a line manager.
The Company
It was mostly very quiet, given it was a small department and a lot of the employees were away on holiday. The employees that stayed in the office were alright, friendly enough and happy to help out.
This placement couldn't have been organised any worse. From day one work was at a premium and the work load and placement never picked up. I did not have the correct server to complete certain work and it would take weeks to get this computer network, this could of easily been arranged before my arrival. It felt like it was all improvised, no planning, no organisation.
Absolutely nothing.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
I had a very good summer placement the previous year in the electronics department and I decided to chance to this new department for a fresh challenge, location and the department was suppose to be more suited for the degree subjected I am studying. My view of the company has not been tarnished, however my view of the department has very much been tarnished.
The Culture
There was only one other summer placement in my department, however I had very little interaction with them, due to working on different tasks. Saying that with the other colleagues I did go to the pub a few times with them and I also competed in a charity football match with the department so overall it was alright.
The price was pretty standard, the area in which the site is based there is very little, but going further into the city centre there is a lot to do. Plus there are good train links to Wales and Exeter and the Cotswold.
Various pubs, clubs, gigs and events around Bristol so the night life was pretty good.
There was a few, however they were very limited.
