    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I've really enjoyed my placement. Everyone is really friendly and is always happy to help. People are happy to chat to you about their work and we've been given talks by others about what they do so its been easy to get to know the company a bit better. Plus a really good lunch allowance and every second Friday off.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the interns get invited to the dinners and trips organised by the staff. Its nice to be included! No one has made me feel like I'm bothering them when I ask them a question. I've also been given real work to so I feel like I've been able to have an impact on the company and am valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager is always happy to help, even if its with silly questions. My line manager looked out for several opportunities for me to develop my skills and learn new ones, even if it wasn't to do with the work I was doing, BP have a buddy/mentor system so you also get assigned to someone who you can ask for help who isn't involved in assessing you which is really useful.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some weeks were busier than others but so far, I haven't been sitting around bored or looking for work to do. I also haven't been so stressed with work that I feel like I can't handle it. The line managers are pretty open so if there's more you'd like to be involved in, they are generally happy to help/organise that. I've been given enough varied work that the last 11 weeks have flown by!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I've enjoyed having real work to do that the company actually needs doing. I'm not quite running the show because my line manager keep up to date with the work that I'm doing to check that I'm on track but I think that's a good thing as it helps me too. I've been allowed to organise and conduct meetings myself and write technical notes too which is all good experience.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've completed two consequence modelling courses which will definitely help with my uni courses next year. I've had on site experience which will help when it comes to our group design projects. I've become quite good at using PHAST which a lot of oil and gas companies use so that'll be useful when it comes to applying jobs. I've also done more presentations already than I've done all through uni so I have definitely developed my presentation skills as that is one thing I was terrible at before.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone seems really happy and pretty relaxed. People are friendly and happy to chat to you if you want to find out about what they are doing - even if it is just because you are interested. They have flexible start/finish times so its okay if you're late because of traffic or if you need to get away early one day which is nice.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • All our objectives were sent to us before hand and all our work, laptops, desks etc were ready for us when we came. They're definitely used to having interns as they line managers were good at setting work that was manageable and to the appropriate level. The assessment process is well set up and communicated to us. It was hard to get a reply from HR before we started but once the placement started, the responses were fast and helpful.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Everything: my line manager was happy to let me go to training courses and sit in on meetings that would help me out in future even if it didn't have anything to do with my current work. We had training courses and talks organised specifically for us. They were encouraging for us to go up to Aberdeen to take part in Technofest (I'm based in Falkirk) and happy to pay for travel for that.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Its hard to tell - the inters have no idea what jobs are available to us or how many jobs there are. The asset that I'm working at is being sold but we've been told we might get offered a job at one of the other offices. The challenger roles look appealing though so it would be good if we got offered a role like that.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah, good number of other interns to socialise with. Been lucky because all the other inters are really friendly! A couple of dinners organised for us too by the company.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Had to live in Glasgow and commute. Cost of living is reasonable in Glasgow but have to commute to up to an hour each way when traffic is bad. Trains are quite expensive but we car share so that's helped with costs.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not sure, don't really like going out. The other interns seem happy with the nightlife in Glasgow. There doesn't seem to be anything much in Falkirk but we don't spend much time out of work in Falkirk anyway.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yeah plenty, line managers are more than happy to let you get involved in whatever you want.

    3/5
