The Role
I enjoyed my internship at CRUK far more than I anticipated I would. The offices are amazing and definitely not what I expected - CRUK is definitely more professional and dynamic than I imagined it would be. Also my internship was incredibly flexible as it allowed me to go on holiday and my travel expenses were paid for - which were very expensive as I was commuting from kent. This really made me feel like a valued member of the team and I cannot imagine any other internship being so accommodating.
Very valued - my line manager was amazing and would consult me on projects and asked for my opinion for things. From the very first meeting she really made me feel welcome and we developed a fairly good rapport- though it may be because we were quite close in age anyway so it was easier to talk to her than if it had been anyone else. Everyone in my team was lovely and made the effort to have a coffee with me at the start of the internship to explain their roles and ask if I had any questions.
I had a lot of support. My line manager would have weekly 1-2-1s with me to talk through my tasks for the week and personal development. She would also check up on me to ask if I had enough to do. I definitely felt as though I could have gone to her for anything I needed.
Quite busy. I was given a fair amount to do but I am quite a quick worker anyway so by the end of the day would find myself with not much left to do. At the early stage of my internship I was incredibly busy and didn't have much time for lunch/breaks etc but I found that the pace slowed down. It is a 3 month internship so I think that's quite natural.
Very early on I was given a lot of individual responsibility - which was simultaneously terrifying but also very cool. Towards the end this lessened and a lot of my job was assisting my line manager/others in my team.
Perhaps not my degree studies but I definitely have developed a lot of transferrable skills which will come in great use in my later career.
The Company
It was relaxed. On my first day I was super nervous and didn't even look at my phone to check FB/texts etc but everyone is super chill and understands that you don't have to be glued to your screen 9-5. Everyone was friendly.
There was no set structure that I had to adhere to. It was more like everyday I would come in and, while having a general gist of what to do, have completely new things to do.
There was 1-2-1 CV sessions, CV workshop and Linked In workshop. I didn't particularly feel as though the company was investing in me but I don't see the internship as something gearing to create future CRUK leaders. If you're looking for that, that would be the grad scheme.

I definitely see CRUK as an end-goal type of job - I would like to work here later on in my career. Right now, on the grad-scheme or entry level position, the salary is just too low for the costs of living whilst I would be worried about the lack of progression in the company. The main thing I have gotten from CRUK is a sense of purpose - I can't tell you how rewarding it is knowing that your 9-5 is aiding in the fight against cancer rather than helping the big dogs at the top of a company buy their next million-dollar yacht or mansion.
The Culture
There were a lot of us (41) and we did cross-organisational fundraising which was nice to meet and talk to the other interns. Everyone was pretty busy though and I never had any time to meet up outside of work because of my commute.
I commuted but Angel is very expensive to eat in. Taste (the subsidised canteen) was a godsend.
No idea but I presume expensive. I mean, it is London.
Yes there was a meet up every Thursdays at a pub but again, I had to commute so couldn't go.
