About You
It was a well-structured and really enjoyable day. Everyone was very welcoming and put you at ease. We were only a small group (around 20) which made it easy to socialise. We had a number of talks from graduates which really highlighted what roles at BP were like and they even gave us hints and tips for the application process at BP.
Being a small group made it easy for one to one talks with a number of professionals in a range of roles at BP. I spoke with someone with over 25 years experience at BP and he still took the time to ask about me and what I could see my future career progression looking like. Little touches (like giving us a free hoodie!) made you feel valued during the day.
Not much guidance was needed in the morning as this was used to give us information about BP as a company and the variety of roles offered at BP, but in the afternoon there was a real focus on interview techniques and how to apply for graduate jobs. I felt like I received a lot of individual guidance and support in this.
I think the insight day will be really useful when applying for future jobs as they really took the time to give us tips for how to approach an interview and apply (i.e. hints for assessment centres, etc). The information I received about BP was invaluable as it was more personal than just reading off their website. I was able to ask questions specific to the kind of career I'd like.
The Company
The whole day was planned really well. The first thing they did was run through a plan for the day which was stuck to all the way through. This consisted of talks and an energy game in the morning, lunch, a couple of tours, then talks with graduates and interview tips in the afternoon.
Overall the insight day was very welcoming and relaxed. I never felt uncomfortable or unsure. They made a real effort to keep the day lively and interesting and give us chances to chat to BP professionals and each other. I was interested the whole time as whenever we had been listening to talks for a while, they would break up the day with a tour or a coffee break.
I feel like I received a great insight into what a full time role at BP would be like. We heard from recent graduates in the areas of HR, Procurement and Commercial Downstream which was great because they each answered questions and gave a specific insight into these aspects of the company.
It was really great to visit the BP buildings in Sunbury as you definitely got a taste for what working there would be like. The people leading the day impressed upon us the values of BP and how much they influenced all aspects of working at BP. This was seen at all levels, from the HR talk to the tour of a drill simulator.
This day didn't completely decide my future career path but it definitely helped! I was able to see the positives and negatives of working in a variety of business roles at BP because we heard from people who worked in a lot of them. They also gave us an information pack which hghlighted which career path you might want to consider depending on what degree you are studying for.
Everything Else
There was an hour long break for lunch where lots of people who worked at BP joined us and mingled. You got a chance to chat to a variety of people including graduates and project managers. The lunch was really relaxed and friendly and you were encouraged to ask lots of questions.
It's only a day out of your time but they pack so much in that's it's really worthwhile. Actually seeing the BP buildings in Sunbury helped you see what working at BP would be like and if I would enjoy it. They gave us so much help with interviews and specifically the application process at BP so if you're going for a graduate job after university I'd definitely recommend this.
