The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and have learnt so much that I can takeaway with me. It was stressful at times, but I soon adapted to working life and had a very supportive and amazing team around me.
I feel like I am extremely valued by my colleagues. They go out of their way to show their appreciation and constantly provide me with positive feedback. I have developed both professional and personal relationships.
I was given lots of support. We arranged regular catch-ups to discuss what I was working on always felt like I could ask questions if I needed to do so.
Generally, I was extremely busy. I found that I either had too much on my plate (due to the team being under resourced) or not enough work due to quiet periods where there wasn't a lot going on. I found that I never really had the right balance between being bored or too busy.
From the beginning I was empowered and given responsibility, which increased as I progressed through the year.
I will now be able to manage my time far more effectively and understand how to effectively prioritise. I also feel like I have really developed my leadership skills this year and would be able to lead teams a lot better in uni assignments.
The Company
My office striked the right balance between being fun and quiet. When we were busy it was a really good working atmosphere where you could get a great deal done and be really productive. At the same time, we had a lot of fun and there was always a buzz.
Quite organised. We had a structured induction with the other placement students when we started. I joined during the busiest part of my team so just went with it when I joined and completed all tasks that came my way without really understanding the bigger picture until a later date. Although in terms of coming back to the firm, our expectations were not managed from the beginning as to what the process involved.
As a whole I would say the firm has invested heavily into us - although this was mainly driven by my team. I attended various training events and also shadowed people who were willing to help and support me.
Working from home
Unfortunately I cannot return to the team that I have been on placement with as they do not take on graduates. So we are supposed to build a business case to change lines of service - which for me is Management Consulting. Although unfortunately the numerical test I took to get my placement back in Feb 2016 did not meet the criteria, so I will have to start the entire recruitment process again, which I am not happy about.
The Culture
The fellow placement students and I regularly met for lunch - although this was done off our own backs, there were not any formal meet ups that the firm organised for us due to budget constraints. In terms of my home team it was quite sociable with regular 'drinks' and social events that we organised ourselves.
Super expensive - LONDON! Although my family are from London, so for me, the costs were not a surprise and I am used to them. But for the other placements students, they seemed extortionate.
London has always had a fab nightlife. Lots of bars and restaurant etc. My office is not far from borough market.
There were lots of charity events, sports and other groups such as the pantomime to get involved in!
