The Role
I really enjoyed the role, there was plenty of variation which allowed me to develop skills across many different areas such as copy writing and database management. As the scheme is so large there are also a lot of opportunities to take part in personal development activities and to meet people across the organisation.
Team members readily gave constructive feedback and encouragement throughout the internship, they also allowed me to get involved with interesting work and didn't restrict me to things they didn't want to do themselves. Being part of a team with multiple interns also helped as it provided another group to run ideas past or ask for help.
I was well supported by my supervisor throughout the placement, they ensured that I received all of the training I required and then made sure that there was support in place for my work throughout my time in the team. They also helped with job applications and were more than willing to offer advice about next steps after the internship.
I was never snowed under but always had plenty to do, as I got more and more used to systems I was able to take on more varied roles and so was never bored just doing the same thing over and over. There was an interesting mix of purely digital stuff and stuff more closely related to social media, such as the creation of case studies which appeared across the charity's social media.
I was given more and more responsibility as the placement progressed. After I successfully completed tasks a couple of times with supervision I was trusted to complete them by myself from then on but with the reassurance that the team was willing to help if I hit any stumbling blocks.
I was able to gain skills across a wide range of areas, both through my role and other opportunities available to people in the internship scheme. The personal development workshops were particularly useful, there were dedicated sessions for things such as CV, interview techniques and presentation skills which will all help me in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very good. It felt like everyone, even those you may not work with everyday, were happy to give up their own time to have a chat about something or offer help. Everyone is busy but that doesn't stop them from making sure that it's a nice place to work, the different fundraising events and the like mean that everyday something different is going on.
The internship scheme was very well organised. At the beginning of the placement we were given a complete induction to the charity, with presentations from representatives of every directorate, which was really useful as it gave me a far greater understanding of what went on day-to-day in the office. There were also a number of activities that we were able to get involved in throughout the scheme, such as a Dragons Den event when we were tasked with coming up with a new way of reaching people at risk from cancer which we then pitched to a panel of judges.
I was able to attend a number of workshops during the placement, they weren't compulsory but you got out what you put in. The CV and interview skills workshop was great, and the presentation skills workshop gave some really useful insights. I was also able to attend a 'writing for the web' workshop which gave me a lot new ideas for how to approach writing copy.
I would definitely consider working for the charity. The cause, the people and the overall office atmosphere make it a great place to work.
The Culture
The interns had lunch together most days and there were regular drinks throughout the placement, both of which were great for getting to know as many of the other interns as possible.
Angel isn't cheap but there are a few places that give discounts when you show your CRUK lanyard so that was a nice bonus.
Working within the Sports Team meant that I was able to attend events that the team was working on, meeting runners and supporters gave a face to the work I was doing which really added to the experience. There were also a lot of opportunities to get involved with intern led fundraising activities, during the placement there were a number of different events such as an Office Olympics, pub quiz and a couple of bake sales.
