    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was a much better experience than I could have imagined. Right from the beginning it was clearly communicated to me what I would be doing and what team I would be part of. I had a great time and met many new people whom I got on very well with.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were more than happy to help me at any point during the internship, from my very first day right through until the end. There were often times, especially during the set-up of systems, that a colleague would happily sit with me for a while until I understood the work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Although my managers were often very busy they always managed to make time to talk with me to make sure the work was going at the right pace and I was able to cope. At least three times a week I would have a talk with one of my managers to discuss my progress.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was given enough work during my time to ensure that time passed quickly and I wasn't left twiddling my thumbs. It was challenging enough to keep me occupied but not so far beyond my skill set that I would become discouraged and unable to cope. I was definitely given the perfect workload.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Perfect amount to make me feel valued and keep me challenged but not too much that was overwhelming. I felt like a valued member of the team who was making a real contribution and due the responsibility given to me I felt as if I would be remembered by the team after I left.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to greatly improve upon my existing skills and learn many new ones which will definitely help me going into my final year of uni. I am not daunted by my final year now but instead feel as if it is something I will be more than able to cope with after improving so much during my thirteen-week internship.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very relaxed and very welcoming. Although everyone was very hardworking I felt as if they all wanted to be there and that they enjoyed their time at work, I certainly did. Everyone got on with each other in the office and there was a great team spirit and everyone had a lot of fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I felt that the whole program was brilliantly organised. Right from day one it was clearly set out as to what each of us were going to do and when it was going to be done. Everything ran very smoothly and it was clear that a lot of time had been spent on organising things.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • During the first three days of the internship everyone starting was given intensive training about the firm and what they do. The training catered to everyone of different skills and was very informative. Throughout the rest of the internship we were given more specific and personal training to help us improve in our fields. It was clear that the company put a lot of effort and time into their interns and graduates.

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the end of the internship I was offered a job with the firm which I accepted. I knew almost straight away that I wanted to begin my full time employment with Morgan Stanley and was absolutely delighted to be offered a position. It was an obvious choice to accept.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The group of interns I started with were very close and I made many new friends throughout the placement. This was largely thanks to the company who organised many social events so we could get to know each other outside of the office and become closer. I am still in touch now with many of my fellow interns.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • For a major city (Glasgow) the cost of living was very cheap compared to others. Staying in a flat just outside the centre of town was more than affordable and I had plenty left over to go out and have a good social life. Also most things are within walking distance so it is handy to meet up with people.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Glasgow is very good. In terms of a night out it is relatively cheap and the variety of different places you can go is excellent. It is always busy as well, although not too busy that it becomes off putting, and the people in the city are also very friendly.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of different social and sports clubs in the company and you are free to join as little or as many as you like. Also we are heavily encouraged to volunteer by the firm which is something I took part in and thought it was refreshing to see such a large company putting huge emphasis on giving back.
