    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work in the oil and gas industry in general is exciting. However, I joined a team at a time when a lot of documentation review work was being carried out and it wasn't particularly exciting. Had I joined at a different time, I probably would have been given something very interesting to work on.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I carried out was definitely useful to the team. I was treated like a fellow employee and the work I completed will be used going forward in the project.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My team were very supportive and encouraged me to ask questions. Everyone was happy to give up time to explain things to me.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had work to do. However, had the work been more interesting, I would have probably worked more efficiently.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. The work I carried out was important to the project and I took part in all the meetings that other team members attended.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship as a whole will help a lot in my future degree and career. Learning about the oil and gas industry and the role BP plays in it gave me a better understanding of what positions I want to work towards. In addition, the technical knowledge and soft skills I developed during the internship will make me a better engineer in my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was excellent. The office had a positive feel to it and everyone was really friendly. It had more of a buzz to it than other offices I had been in which created a better working atmosphere. The only negative was that only a few people ate lunch away from their desk.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. The accommodation was prearranged for all interns which made it easy to settle. A good internship program is also in place which provides training and great social opportunities to mix with other interns. Internship projects provided additional activities to get involved in with other interns based in different sites.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Basic training was provided in presentation skills and resilience. However, aside from this no other training was provided. This is understandable though as the internship is only 11 weeks long. The presentation training was especially useful as it was more detailed than I'd experienced before and provided some very useful personalized tips.

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The oil and gas industry is struggling as a whole so graduate intake is considerably lower this year than in recent years. However, if positions are available, they would be very appealing as BP has a fantastic graduate program. The company looks after its employees and tries to progress graduates into their desired positions.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was excellent, especially if living with other interns. The interns who lived together had a fantastic time in university halls and there were plenty of events at the weekend, from going to tourist sites in the city centre to going out on a Saturday night. Even if not living with other interns, there were several events organised by the intern committee that everyone was involved in. This included nights out, bowling, paintballing, dinners and more.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London was very expensive compared to my university city. Rent for the university accommodation was £650 per month. Nights out and socialising weren't that too expensive, a pint of beer would be £4.50, but in a nightclub the drinks promotions were a lot cheaper. Transport to and from work on the tube cost £7 per day. As I was only in London for 11 weeks, I tended to socialise and spend more money than usual.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was great. The train to the city centre was 40 minutes, which wasn't ideal. However, there were multiple nightclubs within 20 minutes journey from Twickenham. In addition, there was a great selection of pubs in the area and nearby Richmond. The tubes and night buses made transport to and from nights out very easy. If you were happy to travel for an hour on the trains, you could get to almost any club in London.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The intern social committee organised loads of activities which I mentioned before. In addition, the interns made their own plans to go on days out. Interns could also get involved in any of the other BP activities. Graduates had a sports day every other Friday and there was football on Monday evenings.
