    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyable internship. Everyone you reached out to seemed like they genuinely wanted to help you. I met so many interesting and motivated people who were happy to explain their jobs to me. I also got the opportunity to sit with someone from almost every asset class which was great.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There is a really friendly atmosphere at Citi and colleagues were very open and encouraging. You weren't expected to have any prior knowledge in the markets but were encouraged to learn as much as possible and really valued when you contributed to the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone was assigned a manager for each rotation who constantly gave feedback and made sure that you were fully aware of what you had to do. Even when I spoke to one manager and explained that I didn't think the desk was for me, she was extremely encouraging and helpful and provided me with excellent guidance and career advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy. You often had a lot of extra work to do on top of your day to day job of shadowing people on the trading floor and asking questions. Meaning you had to wait for people to go home often to prepare for your presentations and do learning. Having said that, I was constantly interested and kept motivated.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It is hard to be given much responsibility in sales and trading as you aren't qualified to do anything. I would recommend asking people what you can do and actively seeking project work etc.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The amount I have learnt in these 10 weeks is phenomenal. I came in with no markets knowledge and the learning curve was steep. Between the trading game, presentations and just speaking to people, I feel that I have skills for life and will be able to go back into my final year at university with the right mind set in order to prepare myself for my future in the workplace.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Atmosphere on the trading floor is lively and interesting, I couldn't imagine working anywhere else. Everyone on my desks had strong relationships and in between work there was a lot of fun. People were encouraging of eachother and there was a real collegiate atmosphere.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Extremely well. It was well split between training, shadowing, the trading game and internship presentations,. There were also talks most weeks.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We did a full week of training, were supplied with Bloomberg terminals and very senior people helped us in training.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • 5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is very expensive to live in and Canary Wharf is no exception. Most lunch places are quite pricey but you are making enough money to provide for this. The cost of living nearby is very expensive, especially when you look at what you're getting. I lived about 45 minutes away but I wouldn't recommend that due to early mornings and a big commute! There are more affordable options for dinner such as Wahaca that don't break the bank. Overall it's just London standard prices and maybe a bit elevated in some places in the wharf.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf isn't famous for its nightlife but during the summer months the bars across from Citi were filled with people and there was a screen out on the grass some evenings with movies. You are very close to East London so that is where we mainly went to socialise with the other interns, on a Friday night. There are also many restaurants around canary wharf but to be honest we were all pretty tired once the day was over so most of the socialising in Canary Wharf happened on a Friday.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are clubs at Citi and a company gym downstairs. We also had intern events throughout the summer. From the first week of training we all built relationships so then organised our own activities from that also. There was a Citi sports day in Grenwich which was great fun. As a full time employee I have heard that there are many more opportunities than on the internship, for example the company is organising a run along the river next month.
