    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I met a lot of good people and I have been challenged and pushed out of my comfort zone. There were some really good events for interns like trading game and end of summer event. You will meet people who are really passionate about their job and this is really refreshing.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel like as an intern we don’t do work that is necessarily life changing or revolutionary. A lot of Excel work. However, you being there smiling and making good conversation is where you feel like you are actually adding value to the team. Asking them if they need help or just working hard next to them helps. When they say thanks or this is amazing really makes me feel good.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I got a lot of support, weekly feedback and tasks that changed as I met my goals to keep on pushing me to develop. I always made sure I understood the task before I went off and if I had any questions during the task I always felt I could ask. Both my managers had the system of doing one part of the task and having them check it to make sure the format and style was as they wanted. This meant I didn’t get things wrong.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy! Very busy! However I would say there were down afternoons. In those instances I would try to network or read some of the research papers I was given. I liked the level of business. It meant I always had purpose and as long as I worked hard all day I wouldn’t get overwhelmed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I didn’t have too much responsibility; I did get some important tasks. I analysed data that an MD would be looking at or I was summarising reports for team members who would be talking to clients. So it meant that I was contributing to big things and I took that as a responsibility to make sure my work was accurate.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt how to analyse indices. I learnt this from a trader in another team. I honed in on my VBA and database making skills. I think my most important thing was learning to produce work that was client ready. These are all things that will help at university. They weren’t all easy to learn but once I got them they did stick.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It depends on what side of the office you are on. The more market facing roles have a lot more noise. The strategy and compliance side is a lot quieter as they need to be able to think. Everyone is nice and smiley. Some desks do dress down Friday and there is always cake around!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised. We had a week of training and lots of speaker sessions set up throughout. We were able to meet our managers in advance and there were networking breakfasts which let us talk to different areas of the bank as a whole. So I would say it was well organised but the Trading game could have more structure.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt invested in as there were weekly speaker series, a weekly trading game, a community day and networking events. Aside from HR, everyone I met was willing to help an intern develop as long as the intern would be prepared to take time and effort to sit down with them when they have time.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I really like the atmosphere at Citi and I would definitely want to work here again. The hours are long so fitting in with the team is key. They have lots of programmes within the business so that you can move around within Citi and develop as much as you want without leaving. They find retaining talent to be really important.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The interns in my class would do drinks on Friday’s. They also organise socials like parties and bowling during the week. Everyone is really friendly and has found some people they really get along with. However it is not cliquey, anyone can hang out with anyone. It is really good in that way.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I can’t comment on the cost too much as I was staying at home. However, I bought a travel card for zone 2-3 monthly and it didn’t impact me painfully. I would say that other interns commented on the timing of pay and how it made it more stressful for them to pay for their rented accommodation.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is an array of bars opposite work and lots of restaurants and food options. There is also easy access to central so it is good. However, it is nice to get away from the work area as we spend all day there already. So Shoreditch is always a popular choice.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few runs like JPM but they were organised before we started and so couldn’t really join. There are daily challenges though and everyone gets involved with those, they help with self-development. There are also clubs, but as interns we are quite busy so there may not to be time for you to join them.
