    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. There was a marketing fair early on, and that helped me to pick the right team. Further, the people were very nice and always willing to help you learn. I feel like I got the right exposure to different projects, and was able to learn a lot.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team was probably the best part, because they made me feel part of the team even though it was only an internship. We had a few team events which were fun helped us get to know the people better. They were very patient and answered all my questions that I had.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • They did a good job in terms of giving me responsibility while ensuring that I was on the right track. I had guidance from everyone I worked with, which definitely helped me to pick things up quicker. Specifically, some of the analysts/associates were really good at explaining concepts or even what they wanted me to do clearly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This ranges on a day to day basis, I found that some days I would have a lot of things to do on different projects, and some days I had nothing. How busy you are will depend on who you are working with and what kind of projects you are working on. Also, you will have different deadlines for things which can be tight or very relaxed which will impact how busy you are. Keep in mind that when you first start, if you have no previous experience, the simplest tasks will take a very long time, but over the course of the internship, you will improve.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given some responsibility, and was put on a live deal so this allowed me to gain more exposure to the industry. In this job, even as an intern, you will see that things you work on (might be a few slides) may even be used. They gave me a good amount of responsibility for the level I started at.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A lot of what you do if formatting in powerpoint and using excel. This may be beneficial if you have to create any presentations or reports at university. Further, you learn industry knowledge depending on what team you are in, which can be helpful depending on the path you take. In this division, you also have to look at many financial reports and presentations, so it could help you in your degree, specifically if you are studying a business degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is very corporate and what you would expect overall. However, this will depend on the team you join – my team always have a few laughs! M&A is also a job that requires interaction/communication, therefore people are always talking to people. A lot of people are really friendly and even though there are sometimes you will be very concentrated on something, you do get time to have conversations with people.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think Citi has one of the most organised programs. From day one, having the marketing fair to choose your team, to the end, having an end of internship party, they have been very organised with everything. Everyone gets back to you quickly and people are very efficient. I did not have any problems in terms of the set up/start of the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think Citi and my team did a good job to make sure they were giving me different types of work, and I was able to work with a lot of people in the team. The only thing I would have wanted is to learn a little bit more about valuation to develop my technical knowledge.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Car

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are overall very appealing. People in my team were nice, friendly, and very helpful. Moreover, the work is very interesting and you learn something new every day. I would definitely recommend to try to work at Citi or even in the industry to see if you like it or not.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Most of the other interns were nice; however there are always some that are not. I would recommend finding the people you like forget the others. You also do not see a lot of the other interns during your internship unless you make an effort. As mentioned, the other people in my team were very kind and patient so that definitely played a big part in my experience.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost was a bit expensive, but that is because it is in London. London itself is a very expensive city, but with the money you get paid can definitely cover it. If you are on a bit of a tight budget, I would have a good look around first. I found my accommodation on Spareroom and it was about £195 per week, which is definitely not bad for London.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in London is good but expensive. Also, with the hours you work, you do not have much time to go out. Even when you do, you might choose to catch up on sleep or just see some friends. However, there are a number of bars, pubs and clubs in London.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • They did not organise too many things for us. There were a few events in the first week, where I got to know more of the interns, and there is a closing event at the end. Depending on your team again, they may go for drinks on a Friday or have half a day out to do team activities.
