    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Absolutely fantastic- I worked within Mercer Sentinel and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. all the staff are friendly and accommodating and there to help whenever you need it. I was able to get hands on experience in a live project and really feel like I was adding value to the firm

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very - every piece of work I completed was reviewed and given feedback. Always being thanked for the effort and work I produced. the whole team made me feel very welcome and gave me tasks that were relevant and actually adding value to projects not tasks given just for the sake of it.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • the guidance and support given to me from my supervisor and buddy was amazing. they were always there to help, always offering support and information whenever I needed it. Any task I was given, they would make sure I understood what the outcome needed to be and gave me plenty of to get involved with.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During my placement I found myself occupied with tasks all the time. there was always something that needed to be done or something going on. I was never bored nor did I feel over-worked or stressed. the balance was just right.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Tasked with writing quarterly reports, building excel models, conversing with clients - the level of responsibility given to me during my placement was fair for that of any intern. I would not expect to be running the show nor would I expect to have no responsibilities at all and I think Mercer got this element just right.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I came into the team with a very limited knowledge of this specific area of finance and what I have learnt over this eight week period is phenomenal. the experience has provided me with a potential topic for my dissertation next year and the skills I have developed during my time here will serve me well in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was great. Everyone was relaxed, friendly and approachable. This made it very easy for me to settle and fit in straight away and feel more like an employee than an intern.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement followed a good structure with two days induction at the beginning and presentations and wrap up on the final day. there were mid placement reviews with my supervisor 4 weeks in to review my progress. The on-boarding process was fine besides the background check which is outsourced to a third party, who aren't brilliant.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • once a week the investment interns had a training session covering the different areas within the investments business giving us valuable information and a deeper insight into the specific function of each area. Additionally, we had sessions relating to broader topics such as further professional qualifications and software training

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other interns on my placement were great. we all got along really well. We went for lunch together most days and went out for a drink after work a fair amount too.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London prices so fairly expensive.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in London is unbelievable. there is always somewhere new to go and explore and the venues are incredible. it is fairly pricey, but worth every penny!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a Mercer cricket team to get involved with, but being a very bad cricketer felt I would be more of a hindrance than a help..
