The Role
I really enjoyed working for Boots - you receive a lot of support from lots of different people, meaning there are always opportunities to take on new things and find out more about the company. It's a challenging year and they really push to get the best out of you!
You have a real job when you join the Year in Industry scheme, so the work you do really adds value, and people recognise that in your teams and further.
There are so many different people, not only your manager, who provide you with care and support throughout the entirity of the scheme - if you ever have a problem of any kind, there is always someone there to listen and help you solve it!
At times the work load is really heavy depending on what extra things you take on alongisde your day job (e.g charity events/projects etc), however this challenge can be an effective way to helping you manage your time and priorise - as with in any job, at times you will get peaks of work loads and you need to be able to deal with this.
You have a real job that someone, if not you, would have to complete - so ypu have a lot of responsiblity!
All of the skills learned will be transferable not only to uni, but in any job taken on after this one.
The Company
The atmosphere is mostly relaxed, people are friendly and the times you start and finish work are flexible - so the atmosphere is ideal!
The scheme has been running for a few years now, and the team are constantly looking for new ways to make our learning the best it can piossibly. When you join a clear plan is set out so you know what's coming up in your year.
Year in Industry students have a lot of time and money invested in them - we have had off site away days which included staying in a hotel with all meals paid for, and more importantly than that, we have had a lot of personal development time specifically set aside. This personal development time is given priority over the day job which is really useful as it allows you to learn more about yourself as a person and a worker. Within each role, each team gives training on the specific job role - and there are more opportunities to seek further training outside of just your day role.

Future job prospects include: potentially being offered a graduate scheme in your area; the opportunity to be fast tracked to the assessment centre stage on grad schemes that are not your Year in Industry area; potential for a graduate level job. I have been assured I would be offered a role at Boots, though graduate schemes are not decided upon until nearer the end of the placement. The graduate scheme is what appeals to me most as it allows you to fast track to more senior roles within leadership.
The Culture
Most of the year in industry students moved to Nottingham, so there is always someone around after work time if you want to take part in that side of the placement.
Since I commuted to work, I didn't really spend any time in Nottingham where Boots is based - but Boots itself has reasonable food prices and the staff discount used in the Boots store within the main building was really good!
The nightlife is great since there are multiple Universities in the area, and Boots is located around 10-15 minutes drive from the town centre.
There are always charity and other events going on at Boots - all it takes is you asking to get involved!
