    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my placement at Boots. I went into the internship as a first year university student, and although I was younger than most of the other interns, I felt very welcome and was taken very seriously by the staff. I was given a great project and never found myself twiddling my thumbs.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. I worked in the Healthcare Account team, and got on really well with every member. I was also invited along to activities outside the office such as meals out and away days, making me feel very included. I was always congratulated for my hard work and given important tasks to complete.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given so much support and guidance whilst at Boots. I had weekly reviews with both my line manager and team leader, with loads of constructive criticism and next steps. They were always able to help me when I needed it, and became a great reference point for me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would say I was given just the right amount of work whilst at Boots. I had my main project to complete, which went on for the full 10 weeks. I also had side projects, such as helping the team with their day to day roles. I was busy, but not overwhelmed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. Not only did I create a whole new induction plan as my project, but also took over the roles of my colleagues if they were away or off sick. This again helped me feel valued within the team, and like it was worth their time having me there.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed in terms of business knowledge and how to work in the environment of a large corporation will be invaluable to me, as it has helped me decide what kind of workplace I want to spend my career in. Also, the presentation skills gained will be very useful for the rest of my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office was a good mix of serious and fun. We would get our heads down and complete all the work set, but still do fun activities such as going for breakfast or having a weekly quiz. This factor can often depend on the team you are in.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was really well organised. We had events in the calendar right from the beginning, and all of them took place. We had regular check ins with HR to make sure we were on track, and felt like the whole process was very well thought through. I was very impressed.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think more could be done in this area. More proactivity would be good in terms of getting interns onto the training courses the staff have access to, such as software training or business skills workshops. If you wanted to partake in such things, it was up to us to either sort it or ask for it to be sorted for us.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing indeed. My internship has lead me onto a year in industry placement with the company, and other (older) interns have since been offered graduate scheme roles. The progression in the company also seems good, with lots of opportunity to move around in different roles and make a strong career path for yourself.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was nice, we had nights out organised and would often meet for lunch together to see how we were all getting on. The group was really nice and we all got on well, which definitely made the internship process run a lot smoother. We also had a group chat which we would chat on regularly.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My internship was based in Nottingham, about 40 minutes from where my parents live. Because of this, I lived at home and so the placement was very cheap. However if I was to have lived in Nottingham, it is a very student centred city and so wouldn't have cost me too much to live there either.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The Nottingham nightlife is excellent. Due to there being two universities in the city, there is a huge variety of good bars, restaurants and clubs, many of which are very reasonably priced. I would very much recommend a night out in Nottingham for anyone who enjoys that sort of evening.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • This is another one that depends on the team in which you are placed. With my team, we did lots of things such as meals out, nights out, drinks etc. We also did an away day with lots of activities, food and team building exercises. Even as an intern, things like this made me feel very included in the team.
