The Role
Overall I greatly enjoyed the work I carried out. The role is predominantly programming and I build some cool stuff. The work ranged from some web dev to enterprise Java and I learnt a lot.
Very much valued especially as I learnt more and became more confident to voice my opinions. Treated exactly the same as any other employee.
I was able to get all my questioned answered and had people available to help most of the time. Had as much or as little help as I wanted. Ranged for pair programming on project to doing totally my own thing for weeks. Also built a great rapport with all my managers and got guidance on a professional level too.
Comfortably busy everyday. Quite easy to find more work to do and to push back if the workload is too much.
Tasks ranged from ad-hoc bug fixes to architecturing and build and brand new system. Lot's of responsibility there.
I learnt a lot in both programming and soft skills. Definitely have come out a much more advanced programmer. Also have gained confidence in discussions within a workplace and presenting/demoing. Everything I learnt in transferable and is something I wanted to learn. If there's knowledge you specifically want you can easy push for projects around that. e.g. Web development or something which is tied closely to the front office.
The Company
Great friendly atmosphere. Ranges with different teams but all will go out for drinks and lunch. Even talking to people remotely everyone is friendly and pleasant.
Extremely well organised, orientation was great and HR catch up with you throughout the placement.
I spent lot's of time learning from pair programming and asking questions. The firm runs lot's of training sessions and you can spend time learning a range of things from technology to finance. In the induction week we got a fantastic introduction to finance and how the bank operates.

From what I've seen, heard and talk to people about the grad scheme seems an excellent opportunity. Plus involves a training course in New York. A lot is invested by the firm into the grad scheme and being placed into a team afterwards looks seamless.
The Culture
Is definitely what you make of it. In the summer you meet many people including the summer interns and have drinks provided by HR. I made many friends in the summer with some people going and staying. Have gone out and gone on trips with fellow placement students. This all does require effort on your part though!
Cost of living in London is high. However as a finance company in London you are paid competitively to offset this. However Canary Wharf is quite easy to get to from a range of places. I lived in the Isle of Dogs for the most part of the year which is relatively cheap for london, has excellent transport links and you can walk/borris bike to work. You can easily go further afield for cheaper accommodation although this may require a tube change.
Canary Wharf is full of bars with a wide range of budget. There is everything from a Wetherspoons to a whisky and cigar lounge. London however is much bigger than Canary Wharf. Options include: 12 mins to Bank with more Canary Wharf like options there. 12 mins to Greenwich, beautiful pubs and further down more studenty areas. 35 mins to Camden, 20 mins to Shoreditch.
There are lots of event put on to get involved in. Lot's of teams have people playing football. Many events are put on. Lot's of opportunity to volunteer, some interns have even go to schools in the area to teach code.
