The Role
The responsibilities of this role included creating social media posts, writing for the blog and emailing/calling organisations and individuals to write articles about them for the blog. The role became more varied when the interns were sent out to events across England and Wales to gain email sign ups from 'potential volunteers'. Frontier set their interns a target number of sign ups to meet at each event, which is good if you are somebody who thrives on a challenge!
Online journalism interns are thanked for the work that they do on social media and the blog. I would estimate that 50% of office staff at Frontier are interns, therefore our work was highly valued by Frontier. Also, working with likeminded people was great.
I learned out how use a CMS during my time at Frontier and handy hints and tips for event marketing. I also learned the importance of meeting performance targets in business.
Frontier sends their HQ interns across London and further afield. Frontier interns have the opportunity to travel across England and sometimes Wales where they attend events at schools, colleges and universities to speak to students and gain 'sign ups' as they were called. On events days, this travelling kept me very busy indeed. I had the opportunity to visit many areas of England.
We were responsible for creating social media posts and our judgement of what was appropriate to post on social media was trusted.
I'm giving this section five stars as I am hopeful that the experience will benefit me in the near future in terms of finding a full time role in marketing as I am sure it will!
The Company
A young, intern orientated atmosphere was created. Managers are happy and appreciate it much more when their unpaid interns are flexible regarding which parts of the country they choose to travel to.
Frontier are well used to having interns as they are volunteer travel organisation, so the organisation made clear what was expected when it was expected.
I was taught how to use the CMS. Other social media sites I was already aware of how to use. No money was invested in myself as an intern (cannot speak for other interns), apart from travel expenses up to a certain amount and a percentage of particular volunteer projects once you complete your 6 month internship!
National Travel
There is a chance to gain employment at the end of an internship and I would say that st the end of a 6 month internship here, you would be prepared to embark on a career within this company.
The Culture
Staff and interns were friendly and got on well, sometimes pub nights or comedy night would be arranged after work.
Frontier HQ is based in London, unless you live in or around London anyway, costs of living may be high.
Shoreditch has great nightlife, restaurants, music and clubs.
As I referred to earlier, there was the opportunity to go on a volunteer placement to certain destinations at the end of your 6 internship, with a percentage of the cost. Which is great if your are looking for an unpaid internship and interested in doing travelling after!
