    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I felt like I enjoyed the placement more after the first day. The first day felt like too much information was being thrown at us at once to try to get us up to speed on everything that the company does. This involved a lot of presentations some of which felt too long. When we were split into groups on the second day to work on a project for the remainder of the week the placement became much more enjoyable. Actually working on something similar to what some of the employees work on, albeit simpler than what they do, was much more interesting.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Everyone there was as nice as you could want a potential employer to be. One of the first things we were told as a group was how well we had done to get there and that they appreciated us taking out time from our Easter break to be there. So from the very beginning it was clear that they valued us and our time.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Whilst you were working on your project as a group there was constant support whenever you needed it. Any of the employees we talked to told us to call them if we needed any help and were able to help us solve any of the problems we were dealing with fairly quickly.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were a lot of things I did here that will help me going forward. Working on MYSQL and PHP as part of a group project will help when I go back to us it again in my databases module. Beyond that the time spent working in groups with people I didn't know will help me be a better team player both in university group projects and the world of work beyond.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Not much to say here. everything seemed well prepared. Whilst the first day was front loaded with presentations the second day and beyond had more variety that was much appreciated.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Everyone was extremely friendly and willing to help with any problems you had. Not much more you could ask of the people there. Things like the stock market challenge and lunch talks with employees made it easier to talk to the other people you didn't know leading to a better experience for everyone.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot of their time in us. We were there Tuesday to Friday from 9:15 to 4:30 everyday and constantly had someone new talking with us about what they did, how they got to work there etc.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • We had talks from people in a variety of positions around the company some of which had some overlap with other sections of the company which could lead to some confusion over where one department ends and another begins but most presenters did a good job of explaining what they did to the point that I felt that I at least understood the basics of what they did.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Between talking to placement students in the company and a presentation on the clubs and events the company hosted it was clear that they were promoting a work/life balance as well as getting involved with charity work outside of the company.

    5/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I had already know I wanted to work in world of software development after previous work experience before university. My time here just reaffirmed my belief that I should work in this area as I genuinely liked what I was doing.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were only there for a week and as it was a first year insight this was never expected.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • One presentation specifically highlighted the large number of events the company holds through out the year for other employees to meet with each other outside of working hours. There was a large variety too from BBQs to go-karting. It seemed like there was something for everyone.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • We had a few times where we could pick the brains of some placement students about their roles in the company and how they got there in the first place. Their advice about the application process will prove useful going forward when applying for a placement for third year.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • There were a number of different clubs and events that employees could attend and they seemed open to suggestions of new ones if none of those available seemed like something you would enjoy.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Absolutely. Whilst I was afraid that there would be too much listening to presentations on the first day after that things became much more involved and as previously mentioned much more enjoyable.
