The Role
The setting of the workplace is amazing, I don't think I've ever seen any workplace look quite like this, especially in the IT sector. It feels more like the grounds of a stately home. The placement itself was really good and challeneged without being too hard.
Everybody has been really friendly and offers support wherever they can, you can tell that people are genuinely happy working here.
Support was given at practically every step of the way if needed,, I couldn't have asked for more.
I was kept busy enough to not realise that the whole day had passed by, and still enjoyed myself at the same time. It was great!
Seeing as I had to revamp an internal website that is used by all staff members, I would say that I was given a lot of control over how the end result of the project turned out.
Aside from learning new internet technologies, I would say that my presentation skills as well as my skills with other people have definitely improved. The training is a really valuable asset to have for many companies that use analytical software in running their business.
The Company
Really great place to be, people were always friendly and relaxed, up for a laugh and still offered all the support needed and answered all of my (many) questions without getting annoyed!.
We were given an outline at the start of the placement that gave us a day-by-day breakdown of what kind of things we would be doing over the next six weeks, everything seemed to run like clockwork
The firm put us on training courses that they offer to the public which cost a LOT of money, and are really valuable experience for when you apply for jobs in the future.
Subsidised Canteen
I would really want to have a career at SAS, its one of the most unique and brilliant companies that I know, although I'm not sure entirely if they would offer a job at the end.
The Culture
The other placement students lived nearby in High Wycombe, the nearest large town. This meant that bus travel together and nights out to the local pubs were really good and rarely had the opportunity to say that I was bored!
I found some cheap accommodation in Bucks New University, who offered six weeks' living for £15 per night, some of the pubs were quite expensive, but was overall ok. Also, housing in Marlow is expensive, and would probably wipe out all of the money earned from the placement, so High Wycombe is definitely a preferred choice!
Nightlife was good, and was also easy to get away from if you didn't fancy doing anything.
There were loads of after work clubs at SAS, such as football and photography. Also, facilities in High Wycombe are great (loads of buses, excellent shopping center, direct trains to London).
