The Role
I was given a challenging project and given free reign on how much I wanted to take on. The people and facilities here (particularly the restaurant!) have been outstanding.
I've been made to feel welcome and part of the team by both my project team and the HR team who managed us from a development point of view. I was always made to feel that my work was having a real impact and was adding value.
I had the support of some very experienced people when I needed it - they are all extremely busy but they were always willing to give their time to help. My project manager also regularly gave me advice and insights from his extensive career in IT and Business that I can take into my own career.
Aside from a very short time period when I was unable to commence my project due to unavailablity of data, I had a balanced workload throughout.
While I wasn't expected to deliver a finished product (which would not have been possible in 3 weeks), I was put in charge of developing a solution to an existing business problem, one that normally would be tackled by a developer with several years experience.
Getting to grips with data, data sources and gathering requirements from different stakeholders, particularly when they all have unique views/needs has been fantastic experience for me.
The Company
As it was a busy time of the year, my office was quite quiet for most of the day - I didn't mind this - we all had plenty of work to be getting on with! However we did get a chance to attend a SAS Professionals event, take professional photographs of attendees and make video interviews of our placement.
Changes to my project just before I commenced work meant that I was unable to do any work on the project for 2 days. Otherwise everything was well organised.
I completed 2 separate SAS courses totalling several thousand pounds in value.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I would strongly consider working for SAS, they have a fantastic culture and treat their people well.
The Culture
Most of us lived in High Wycombe and were able to sample the ales there after work!
High Wycombe was relatively cheap compared to London.
Plenty of bars in Marlow and High Wycombe.
There was a photography club and after-work football on Tuesdays.
