    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really great company to work for. Fantastic experience in a completely alien industry to myself. My financial analysis skills were greatly developed, and I was able to meet a collective of very intelligent employees from a varied background. There is a big internal focus on networking with other employees, and this definitely helped me develop my expectations of future careers.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Due to it only being an 8 week internship, it was tough to really establish yourself in that period of time. However, all of the people I met were happy to talk about their own job roles and career paths. They gave me a lot of advise into what I should be doing going forward and allowed me to ask questions that I wanted answer for my own career.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was great and really wanted me to get the most I could out of the internship. I was set meaningful tasks that contributed to strategic decisions made by the business. Other team members allowed me to ask questions about the role as well as understanding what is expected of graduates.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I didn't feel that busy through the 8 weeks, but I feel that was because it was difficult to start a project when i would be leaving in 2 months time. I made sure that I networked with a large scope of people to develop my communication skills whilst ensuring I shadowed key business persons internally to best understand what the business was doing externally. I very much enjoyed this aspect of my internship.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This is similar to how busy I was. I was given a good level of responsibility, but it would have been difficult to attain more due to there being a limited amount of time. I was more focussed on getting to grips with the business' future strategy and global operations. Along with other interns, I attended several one on one meetings with very senior members of staff, and feel that if i wasn't trusted, I wouldnt have been given the opportunity.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This is the biggest benefit of the internship. I have been to several interviews at Big 4 firms after this internship and they are all impressed with the name on the CV and the skills that I learnt whilst at TR. The basic skill set instilled in you is key for your career, and you very quickly realise that you have changed the way you conduct yourself. I really feel the standard of my University work has improved.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was a little older than ones I have worked in before. I think this made the atmosphere slightly different to my expectations and it felt quite quiet. However, I feel that this is because I have unique experiences. Everyone is really keen to help you out and provide career advice or insight. I am very grateful for that, and feel that it will assist my own career.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Apart from a small blip at the beginning, it was really well organised and there was a lot for the interns to do throughout the whole 8 weeks. We had a really nice team in HR looking after us. Allowed us to develop ourselves and get involved in a wide range of projects that we had personal interest in. I am very grateful for that.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of afternoon and days of training that developed our own skill set. I would have potentially liked a little more on the reporting tools, but I was able to ask other members of staff for some assistance when I needed it. It was only 8 weeks and that meant there was limited amount of opportunity to train as well.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There was potential for a graduate role at the group, but I personally wanted something a little different from a grad scheme. This mainly came from me asking other persons at the firms background, and they all had worked at the Big 4. This is where I want to now go on to, but I can definitely see the appeal to working at TR.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Only 8 weeks so difficult to always be social. I commuted from outside of London, so had to leave straight after work, plus early mornings. I have done a placement year where the social scene was really good, so it is always up to what you make of it. If you can, make sure you get involved (especially as at the corporates, its usually free)

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Its London, so its really expensive, but you have to expect it. I lived at home, so paid no rent, but travel cost a lot. I would advise exploiting your contacts and not paying rent as that will enable you to save a lot of money. Going out costs about 3 times more than uni, but that London for you!

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Its London so its always there. Very expensive, but you do get paid more to be there. If you ever get the opportunity to go out on a Thursday night, you can see the bankers on nights out. That really is how the other half live. Southwark is quite quiet, but really close to central and all the big clubs and bars. Really cool places to eat and always something happening on Southbank

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Apart from the two HR events, there wasn't that much for my time there. You definitely could take advantage of other things to do in London. I would have liked a few more things to break the ice in the first few weeks, but the program is very busy and HR have to manage their own projects at the same time as the interns.
