    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • People were really nice and the program itself is very well respected. It could have been slightly more organised, but considering it was only 2 months long, I think it would have been difficult to achieve this. The work itself was interesting and you get to meet a lot of people across the business.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone is aware that you are only an intern and will only be on site for a small period of time. As a result the work that you are given is very short terms focused. However, the project I was involved in was interesting and the team around me were always engaging.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a unique experience where my manager was on leave for the majority of my time there. However, the rest of my time was willing to offer me a lot of insight as well as guidance and support where required. The program itself also had clear processes if you felt you weren't receiving the required support.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Mostly focused on a single project for the entirety of my internship meant it was a relatively steady pace. However, I know that other interns were very busy and others were not busy at all. I think that this internship is all about the role you are in and the team you are associated with.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Would say that overall, and in comparison to other internships, there was a very limited amount of responsibility in role that I undertook. This was one of the first summer internships i undertook, so was surprised with subsequent internships that offered a significant amount of responsibility. Overall, I would say that the scheme should trust their interns a bit more.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I thought that this was one of the most disappointing factors of the programme. Before joining, we were told that there would be a level of training offered to interns. Aside from a basic level of Excel training, I was disappointed with these options, and felt that there could have been more effort put in to develop us.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Canary Wharf office is very busy and has a lot of buzz. I worked primarily in the Southwark office, which is slightly more dated and has a less busy vibe. However, all of the people in the office that I met were really nice and very willing to offer you insight into the company.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • In my opinion, the internship was well organised. We had a couple of hiccups with wages early on, but aside from that, we were well organised for regular trainings, meet ups and presentations throughout. It would have been nice to have a bit more communication before joining, but overall, it was organised well.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As previously mentioned, I believe that this area of the internship was very lacking. It would have been nice to understand the transition of skills learnt from internship level into operational jobs or the graduate scheme itself. However, I think that primarily due to time constraints, these activities were limited overall.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think the company overall has some very interesting opportunities for graduates and future employment. This is primarily due to the size and scope of the operations that Thomson Reuters is involved in. I personally decided not to consider the group as a future employer, but many on my internship stayed or ended up working there.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A lot of interns commuted into London (including myself). As a result, it was quite difficult to have a good level of social engagement. Members of my time made an effort to get to know me and people were always more than willing to go for a drink after work on a Friday.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I commuted from home (outside of London) so my only costs were the monthly train ticket which was quite expensive. Socialising in London is always more pricey that outside, but you just sort of have to lump it. Everyone is paying the same amount as you. If you are lucky, you will be on a time that picks up the tab on a corporate card.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Waterloo isn't particularly busy in the evenings, but is great in terms of commuting into central night and the west end for a night out. London is even more connected than it used to be ( late night tube service) so wherever you are in the city it is easy to get around.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were several summer events organised to bring the interns together. I also played in a 7 aside football match every week as well as regular basketball games. I was very impressed with this as it isn't regular to be involved in these activities in such a short internship. I would encourage them to keep running these activities.
