What made you apply to Cancer Research UK?

I saw the internship advertised on RateMyPlacement and it caught my eye as it was one of the only internships that offered such a range of different positions. Each internship description set out what your responsibilities and work would be like if you applied, which made it clear from the beginning whether it was the right fit for me. However, the main reason that I wanted to work for Cancer Research UK was because of the life- saving work of the charity.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my internship, mainly because of the people around me. My team were really approachable and friendly, and I felt I could ask for help whenever I needed it. There were also forty six other interns in my intake, which gave the internship a great social feel. I also really liked that it was twelve weeks long, as although the time goes so quickly it meant that I could see my projects through from start to finish.

How has this internship affected your career prospects?

I feel that I now have a solid few months of work experience which will enhance my CV and provide me with the transferable skills that I need to have to work in a large business with important clients. For example, how to negotiate a deal. We were also given CV and cover letter training days which are a great bonus. Cancer Research UK really looks after their interns and makes sure they get the most out of their internship.

How well organised was the internship scheme?

Cancer Research UK has been carrying out internship schemes for a number of years now and knows how to make them run smoothly. As well as having plenty for me to work on within the team there were also intern-only projects which gave us the chance to lead a team and work off our own initiative. Every intern has an intern manager which is crucial to the progress and development of the intern and the team as a whole.

What did you do on a daily basis?

My work varied from day to day, as I would be given a task which was dependent on what our team and therefore what our clients needed. One day I would have back to back meetings while travelling around London and the next I would be thinking of a fundraising idea for 4,000 people or trying to secure a £500 prize. Each day was made very interesting and I felt like I was improving my set of skills every day.
