Placement (10 Months+)

Why did you choose to work at STFC?

STFC provides me with an environment most suitable for my personal development and a work culture which is suitable for me, considering my equal professional interest in Physics and Engineering.

What are your responsibilities?

My current responsibilities are quite diverse in nature. It involves from supervising development of a piece of muon instrumentation which has a probability to be space-bound & performing simulations of different muon and inelastic neutron scattering experiments based at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source to developing and curating online training content for the scientific community.

What is the best thing about being based at your location?

The Harwell location (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) gives me vibes similar to that you may get when you are at CERN in Switzerland or NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in the USA. You are not only witnessing great science but also making major contributions to the quality of science that is done in this location. Also, you have plenty of healthy walking routes inside the location while you can enjoy some of the best countryside views if you are commuting every day.

What makes STFC a great place to work?

I cannot think of a better reason than being part of a great scientific community that performs outstanding scientific research using state-of-the-art instruments. Fun aside, STFC provides you with a great work-life balance supported by your line managers which is occasionally difficult to obtain in some other organisations. STFC also has its own Recreational Society in some of its locations where employees can indulge in their hobbies whilst at work, allowing a healthy work culture to thrive.

What training have you received so far?

Data Protection and Confidentiality, Radiation, Cleanroom Access, Project Management, Scientific Report Writing & Stakeholder Interactions.

Are you involved with any networks at STFC?

IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), IoP (Institution of Physics), the recreation society on site, Muon Division in ISIS, Precision Development Division at RAL Space
