What was the interview process like?

The whole process was smoothly coordinated and I was kept well-informed at every stage. I received information about my team before the interview to help me prepare. On the day the interviewers made me feel welcome immediately and I was encouraged to ask questions.

What was the atmosphere like in your team?

Everyone in my team was passionate about their work and there was a friendly and supportive atmosphere! I was sat next to other interns who helped me settle in quickly and everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and valued - including senior managers.

How much responsibility were you given?

I had a defined project throughout my internship and was given real responsibility from the start. I was involved in meetings with external stakeholders and felt that my opinions were valued. My manager was always there to support me but gave me freedom to work independently and implement my ideas.

How promising are the graduate prospects?

There was a strong emphasis on personal development and the CV and interview workshop allowed us to share experiences and gain practical feedback. I had the chance to network and the variety of my role helped improve my employability skills. I have since gained a permanent position in the charity-sector!

What were the activities outside of work?

Because the interns started together there was a real sense of community and plenty of socialising. The local area had loads of great cafes and bars so there was always something to do! The interns arranged fundraising events and there were also lots of volunteering opportunities to get stuck into.

What advice would you give someone applying for your role?

The time flies once you’ve started so make the most of every opportunity! Arranging inductions and volunteering at events are both fantastic ways of gaining an insight into other areas of the charity. Everyone’s really approachable so there are plenty of opportunities to network.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was juggling my other commitments outside my internship. The team have been really supportive and flexible around the number of hours I wanted to volunteer. I usually volunteered three days a week around my part time job

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety! My manager helped ensure that no two days were the same by getting me involved in a wide range of tasks. I was encouraged to explore areas of interest within my project and there was a good mix of independence and team work.

Where has the experience exceeded your expectations?

The organisation of the internship and the level of support really exceeded my expectations. When we started, we received a comprehensive induction and this was followed by regular 121’s. The volunteering team were always on hand if I needed anything and my manager was fantastic throughout.

Describe a situation where you have surpassed expectations?

At university, I always struggled with presenting. I shared this concern with my manager and together, we decided that I should present my project to the rest of the team at the end of my placement. The prospect was daunting but she helped me prepare and I received positive feedback!
