    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Learned a lot of valuable skills which are definitely transferable between industries, as well as get a good insight into how an area of the business works as well as experiencing he office environment. However, hated being at a desk for 8 hours a day and will avidly avoid getting s job like that in the future.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Obviously you're always going to get to know some members of your team a lot more than othe members. I got to know some of my colleagues really well and these types of relationships made my time there more enjoyable. Those that I knew less I still got on with and I never experienced any negativity.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As much as I needed, but I always tried to do something/learn it myself. I got on really well with my manager, we rarely had any issues.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some days I was really busy which I preferred as you felt like you were getting the most out of it and really contributing to the overall effort, as well as making time go much faster. However some days there was less to do/the work got very repetitive, so you ended up having a not-very-productive day.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Felt reasonably responsible so I would generally have a crack at dealing with things on my own first and my manager would trust me to do that which was good, but would happily always help out if needed - I think the balance was about right for that type of environment.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Some of the skills I learned, specifically Microsoft access, are very transferable and will be useful in most types of business. However, I wouldn.t necessarily like to be in the department that's using them, as (although being quite interesting and understandle why it's important), I didn't find it that stimulating - we're all different and even with an abundance of sleep and coffee my brain can simply not deal with looking at spreadsheets/databases for 8 hours a day.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally pretty quiet as the average age of people was around 50. There was one person that was great to be around which somewhat made up for the lack of atmosphere. Everyone was nice to talk to, but there was a lack of atmosphere.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Generally good, it's a good placement scheme that has had years in practise so they know what they're doing, but due to organisation protocol, specifically IT systems, it was a bit of a shambles setting up new users when I started, and the same is happening this year whilst I am trying to handover my job to 2 new undergraduates.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had many opportunities at dealing with people which I believe is a very important skill as being social is a very important part of business and life in general. I did a couple of presentation which went less well than they have been going in my first 2 years of uni, but I guess it kept me in practise.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have been put off from considering the organisation as a future employer from the overall experience I had in my department. It wasn't my first choice of area to be in, and I know many people that have had a much more enjoyable/fun/varied time whilst still achieving a lot. I definitely valued the whole experience as it made me learn/ realise many things, one being that if any job description involves 8 hours a day looking at a screen, it's not for me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Luton is by a considerable margin the worst place I have ever visited. However there was roughly 85 students in my placement year so there is always going to be a lot of people that you get on with and the social scene was generally excellent. Not sure if the year would have been that bearable without the rest ofnthe unides.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Stuff like going out generally was relatively cheap thanks to the discount we got in entry to clubs from being part of GM. However things like car or content insurance were massively expensive as in Luton, serious crime is roughly an hourly occurrence.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not greet variety/town is a dump, but the undies made up for it.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Reasnonable things happening all the time, like 3 peaks challenge or London to brighton bike ride.

    3/5
