The Role
For the most part the internship was enjoyable, largely down to the presence of other staff members and interns.
Immediate colleagues and superiors were very keen to hear my thoughts and other staff members reached out to make me feel valued.
I received as much support as I believe my managers could have given. Supervisors went to extra effort to ensure the experience was valuable for me.
For most of the internship I was able to balance my workload to a reasonable amount but nearing the end I found I was rushing to complete tasks which had piled up.
For many tasks my decisions on the work I did had free-reign and given I was the only person with specific expertise I found most of the decisions I made passed.
My skills as a professional were certainly bolstered by the internship, with particular attention to improving skills in which I specified I wanted to grow on at the beginning. However as I did not have a superior in my field as a designer, I did not receive much guidance in industry-specific skills.
The Company
The office was quiet and hard-working but still a relaxed atmosphere. The physical space however was somewhat stifling and uninspiring.
The process of inductions and support were very thorough and my managers had thought out my work plan well.
As well as generic training and development from the organisers of the internship my line-manager made sure that I had lots of experience to improve skills I wished to work on.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
There is a reasonable chance I would work for the University again but as a career I would like something more fast-paced and design-focused.
The Culture
As other interns were working alongside me there were other students to socialise with and share the experience with.
Edinburgh is a great place for socialising but is one of the most expensive places to live in the country.
Nightlife is vibrant and varied, especially during the Festival month.
Working for a university opens options for many other avenues as a student or employee.
