About You
The Shearman & Sterling vacation scheme was a true insight into the legal profession, it definitely gave you a fuller picture of the firm and sold itself very well!
You could tell that the vacation scheme was really important to the firm and they were looking to get to know you better. I was given a range of activities to complete which may be expected of a trainee at the firm and generally kept busy helping out other members of staff.
Supervisors were always willing to help you out or have a chat regarding any work you had trouble with. This also extended to general guidance on what steps I should take next in order to secure a training contract.
Allowed me to develop the practical application of my legal knowledge and understand the commercial considerations that are important to clients.
The Company
A range of socials were planned which were well attended by trainees as well as other members of staff. Graduate Recruitment also ensured that there were plenty of presentations from various departments to gain an insight into the work of departments you weren't sat in.
Friendly atmosphere in which everybody was interested in getting to know you and welcoming you to the firm.
Even though you were only a vacation scheme student you felt valued by the firm and this was reflected in the amount invested in opportunities for personal development.
A real insight into what life as a trainee would be like at the firm and provided a useful comparison to other vacation schemes I have been on.
Answered a lot of my questions on how the culture at an American firm may differ from other London based firms.
Confirmed that I want to work for an international law firm.
Everything Else
A good wage, unfortunately as I live outside of London accommodation costs meant most of my pay was spent before I arrived.
Plenty of opportunities to network, particularly as I was taken on the Finance Away Day which included networking drinks/meal as well as team building exercises.
Relaxed and provided a very good reflection on the firm.
Plenty of social activities running on an evening, I was even invited to join my trainee buddy on the Softball, Football and tag Rugby teams!
Shearman really sold itself as a firm, already been recommending the firm to my friends who didn't secure a vacation scheme this year.
