The Role
The Cobbetts vacation scheme had the best structure out of any other vacation scheme I attended. There were plenty of opportunities to socialise, both organised by the firm and by the vacation scheme students themselves. The scheme even included a court visit and a day run by the College of Law on legal skills.
All trainees, associates and partners were very open and accommodating. There was a genuine sense that you were the potential future of the firm, and people treated you accordingly.
Having never studied law before, I was given tremendous support and help by all staff. Nothing was handed on a plate, nor were you left floundering with no guidance as to how to search for an answer. Even associates and trainees that were not actively involved in the recruitment process were more than happy to help.
I learned a tremendous amount about the practical workings of legal research, client relationships and case management.
The Company
The partners were very sociable and funny; they lead the group and put everyone at ease.
The organisation was perfect, and at every point you knew exactly what you had to do.
I learned a tremendous amount about the practical side of legal research, client relationships and managing case files.
Company Parties/Events
It is no secret that Cobbetts, along with the majority of firms, suffered during the recession. However, the dignity and intelligence by which the difficult economic situation was handled is well documented; backed up by fellow trainees I met during my vacation scheme. Looking to the future, I was particularly impressed by the Training Partner, Richard Webb, and his grasp and understanding of the current evolution in the delivery of legal services.
The Culture
Most days the students met up for lunch and after-work drinks were organised on one of the nights. This was alongside the social events organised by Cobbetts.
Manchester is very active but far cheaper than London.
Cobbetts is right in the centre of Manchester.
There were several socials organised, including a court visit.
