    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed it. Good variety of work, lots of responsibility. Looked after well by supervisors. Friendly envrionment, shop floor staff very helpful when in need.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone is always there to help if needed. I was given very important jobs which directly affected the shops ability to run. Also i was given important projects that would cost the company lots of money and time. The staff are a sociable group and we often played football after work on fridays and went out for meals. It was a very enjoyable place to work

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Regularly checked on by Manager/ Unit manager. They were always checkign that I had done something without any problems and were always checjing to make sure that my own development was goign ok, for instance with the Who Am I? presentations letting me have run throughs and readign the stuff I had already done and offering advice/ cosntructive criticism

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It depended on the day, There were some days where i did not stop due to project work, office work and the need to complete the press shop schedule. There were occasions during the middle of the week where i found myself with nothing to do however.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was solely in charge of the press shop schedule and maintenance tracking. I was told the press shop schedule was the most important job in the shop and failure to correctly compelte either of these tasks could result in the shop stopping and us not producing vehicles. Towards the end fo my year i have trained others on how to do these tasks and handed them over. Now, the tasks that i was doing by myself are shared out between 6 different people at any one time.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have definitely improved my work place skills. I am now a better communcator and presenter. I am more driven to work hard and more organised with my work load. However in terms of my degree, I have not used anything this year which is really heavily related to my engineering degree, with the exception of the manufacturing modules.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere in the office. We are very separate from the res tof the factory and as such much mroe inegrated with everyone else. Everyone is very sociable and willing to help out if needed.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Vauxhall do a great job of gettign new undergrads started. The handover with the previous years undergrads is very well run and provides a lot of opportunity to learn about the jobs we are going to be doing. There are lots of opportunities to meet the other newundergrads and make friends. During the year we are checked up on often to ensure that we are progressing as we nee din accordance with our degrees and that we are managing ok with the work load and also outside of work with our living arrangements.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Have been given shop specific training, and the chance to develop already learned skills such as excel and presentation.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Would definitely consider working here after graduating. However there are much fewer graduate jobs than there are undergrad jobs, so would be a lot more difficult to acquire a position here, but will definitely try.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Brilliant, all the placement studetns are in hosues together and we regularly go for nights out, cinema trips and to top golf over in watford. On top of that we have done many weekends away in Brighton, Newcastle, Leeds, a took a weeks skiing hoilday to Bulgaria. My friends on placement are now probably the group i am closest too out of anyone and I will definitely be keeping contact with as many as possible once placement has finished.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living cost very low. We managed to secure a hosue for £250 a month but it was like living in a hovel. There were some who payed a lot more (closer to the £400 mark) but it really depends on what you look for. Vauxhall are very helpful with finding a house. I lived with three other lads and we chsoe our house because it was close to work and the train station, and because it was so poor, we were always able to have parties and host pre-drinks because it literally couldn't get any worse.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Awful, if we wanted a good night out, we had to go go over to batchwood in St Albans (amazing place-banging 80's disco room) or into london for an expensive one. There was a liquid in luton but it was beign kept open by undergrads and as we stopped going its now shut down. All luton really has now is a yates which is terrible. There's also watford down the motorway but that reeks of evil as well

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We play football after work on Fridays, there was a start rowing course. We are going to be doing the London to Brighton bike ride for charity in 2 weeks time, a small group compelted the london marathon. Lots of chances to go to wembley and see england play free of charge. Vauxhall sponsors the home nations so there are lots of football based activities and we do charity events as well.
