The Role
From the start of placement, I have really enjoyed my placement. I have been given a wide range of tasks and this has helped me decide what I want to do looking forward.
From the beginning I felt completely part of the HR team, I was given real responsibility from the start and my opinion and input was always considered just like any memeber of the team. Also felt valued by managers across the company from a number of different functions as I felt they appreciate the work I did.
The support I've had from my direct manager and close team has been more than I ever expected. A lot of my job deals with queries from employees and my manager will help in anyway they can to ensure we can work it through to get the best result.
Very busy which I personally think is the best way to be, one day isnt the same which means you're always facing a new challenge!
As an undergraduate at Vauxhall, responsibility is definitely something you cant shy away from! From the first day there were several things that I needed to complete on a weekly basis that if I didnt do them no one would and although you're supported, being an undergraduate isnt an excuse for not doing it! Once I was comfortable in this I was given more responsibilty outside my defined role and this reponsibility has given me some of the best experiences and the chance to develop my skills
There are so many skills that I have developed this year however the one I think that will help me in the future is my communication skills. As part of my role I speak to the majority of levels within the organisation and members of the wider community which means I feel I know how to approach a number of different people and situations. I have also presented in front of the senior leadership team and Trade Union in plant, to a lecture theatre full of Uni Students and also a big number of school children. This can relate back to team work at university and the working environment after.
The Company
Very positive office considering how busy everyone is
The placement year is well intergrated into the organisation. Jobs are defined and the two week handover period helps settle you into the business and role.
Training has been good, we have been interview trained to company standard and also given CSR activities as a Undergraduate group and a unit.
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Prospects are extremely good, the roles that are offered to returning undergraduates are great and often supported to go into further education. (masters) Very appealing!
The Culture
Yes, there is oppurtunities to live together while you're on placement and there was loads of social events so we could get together outside of work as you dont tend to see the whole undergraduate group during work. We went to Aintree races this year and a group will be going away together. I have definitely made a few great friends during my time here
Chester isnt the cheapest student city to go out in however living wise its standard price. Definitely recommend getting to liverpool as its a cheaper better student nightout.
I am from chester so I always enjoy a night out there although a little pricey. Liverpool and Manchester are a cheap train though so theres loads of options
CSR wise and volunteering, Vauxhall really push the oppurtunities. We hosted local schools to come into plant, all organised by the undergraduates and we also go into schools and promote manufacturing. For personal development this is fantastic and looks great on your CV as you're recognised as STEM volunteers. Outside of work theres loads in the local area you just have to be willing to search for what suits you!
