The Role
I've enjoyed the tasks I've been given in my job role and the support I've recieved both in my job role, and in other areas such as social and housing.
I felt very valued, and have both given and taken knowledge from my co-workers during my placement.
My manager has a very busy role so gave me time when he could, but idealy I could gave done with some more guidance and structure in this area. However, others in the office filled in in this area so I wouldn't say I have been at a disadvantage.
Up until 6-7 months in to my placement, I had several roles and responsibilities, but it hasn't been until the last 3-4 months of my placement that I have truly been bust enough to completely fill my working day. This has been the best part of my placement where I get to work on interesting projects, that are engaging and fill my days - making them fly by!
I've been given a lot of responsibility in some of the projects I've worked on. The 3 RedX projects I have worked on have all focused on some of the top 5 Quality defects seen in the plant, but despite this, the vast majority of responsibilty and decision making rests on yourself, and support and supervision is given when needed.
I've learned a lot more about how real world engineering operates, and the working day structure I have become used to will benefit me greatly when I return to university to carry out my final year project. Despite knowing my placement year didnt involve a field of engineering that I particularly with to work in in the future, it has opened my eyes to how it integrates with my desired field (Manufacturing vs. Design), and I think this knowledge will be very useful in the future.
The Company
Good atmosphere. Supportive but fun.
Overall I felt it was well organised. Some areas of it were less so, with training usually given in October pushed back until February.
I was sent on several training courses during the year, and allowed to visit a supplier design company for a couple days as it is an area that interests me.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Average. Not 100% sure it is the field I wish to work in in the future, and whilst the company does take on Graduate engineers, there doesn't appear to be a structured scheme to the same level as the undergraduate program.
The Culture
Plenty of opportunity for nights out and organizing social activities. The handover fortnight helps introduce all the undergraduates to each other and start from there.
Cost of rent - £347.50 - More expensive than many others that I know of. Socializing costs were of a standard level.
Below standard. Liquid...
I took part in several 5 a side football tournaments during the year outside of work.
