The Role
I really enojyed my placement due to the fact there is a large undergraduate community and i really enjoy my role and my team. Only areas where I havent really enjoyed the placement is the area it is in 'Luton'; there isnt much to do in this area. On the other hand it is on a direct train link to London (takes around 30mins) and is quite a cheap area to live in, so your wage isnt too much of a stretch.
I feel very valued by my colleagues. My role has been a role within my team for 5 years now so my team and managers know that we are university students which are capable of handling real work and really want to get stuck into as much as possible. Also as time goes on and your managers get to know you capabilites and what you enjoy they will make sure you get invloved with anything you like. You can also ask other teams if you can shadow them if you have an interest in what they do.
They understand that we are here to learn so with a lot of projects at the begining my manager will talk me through the process of how we do things and why, which has been very interesting and usefull - to not just get thrown tasks and not understanding the importance of them. Other teams too will explain to you what they do so you can gain a rounder experience of how the organisation works.
I have been busy on a day to day basis. Obviously there are peaks and troughs, some times on a project you will be running around trying to organise events, vehicles, or deadlines for creative to be put up. Other days you will have more of the analytical side and reporting which is a bit slower but in marketing there is always something that needs doing.
I was given a lot of resposibility which was great. I helped a lot in the planning and development of events which was really interesting coming from a marketing side, didnt think i would get to gain experience in that area. I also had to look after the marketing vehicles when we launched new vehicles which meant that i got to meet a lot of people in different departments which was really interesting to see what they did. I was also trusted with whole marketing projects, campaigns and with clients such as auto trader.
My role has given me many transferable skills for future employment and uni. Such as time management, i will not wake up early and have more of a productive day and go to my lectures! Also just being more strick with myself and deadlines which i have learnt here will really help with my uni work. I have learnt a lot of marketing skills as well which will really help me gaining my next job, such as above and below the line marketing skills such as TV, outdoor, brochures, radio, and online. I have also learnt valuable skills in project management and budget planning - this is something that will really help in my future employment.
The Company
The marketing department is really open, friendly and helpful.
The placement was very well organised overall. The hand over was well organised too and really good for social reasons, you got to meet all the undergraduets quickly and you stay in halls for the first 2 weeks which is great fun, its like having a 2 weeks of freshers. Not only was the hand over very good for social reasons but it was a good idea to have some one to show you what you need to be doing for the first two weeks and getting you to meet people, what they do and where they sit within the office.
They invested in us by giving us excel training and presentational training which will be really handy in the next work place and uni.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There is a gradute scheme, which some may find appealing.
The Culture
There is a good social scene always something going and being close to london is handy.
Luton is pretty cheap baring in mind how close it is to london.
There isnt much of a night life in luton town centre, but you can go further a field to st albans, harpenden and london which are better.
There anrt that many activities in luton, vauxhall do set some up from time to time, such as quiz nights. But outside of work activities is something you usually have to organise your self which is still fun.
