About You
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight as I felt that I was able to develop my commercial awareness skills, gain an insight into the work and culture of Shearman and Sterling LLP and was given the opportunity to network with lawyers at the firm.
The insight day was well structured, with a number of different members of the firm giving presentations on the day. Graduate recruitement, trainees, associates and partners were all involved emphasising the value Shearman and Sterling placed on myself and other prospective applicants.
I received a good deal of support during the insight day. Members of graduate recruitment gave useful tips on how to stand out in applications to the firm, two trainees undertook a useful skills workshop and there were useful presentations on key practice areas of the firm which gave me an insight into areas I would be interested to work in.
The skills workshops helped me develop my commercial awareness skills, which are key when working in the legal sector. I also gained an understanding on how to make a successful application to Shearman and Sterling.
The Company
As previously mentioned, the insight was well structured. The firm conducted numerous presentations in different areas and I felt I gained a great deal of information. The networking opportunity at the end if the day was invaluable as it gave me the opportunity to gain contacts with lawyers from the firm.
The members of the firm were very friendly and helpful, encouraging participants to ask as many questions as possible to ensure that Shearman and Sterling were the right choice for them. I felt the members of the firm were keen to develop our skills and were not solely focused on promoting the firm.
Although the insight scheme was only a day long, the firm was able to help participants improve a broad range of skills. I felt I developed my networking and commercial awareness skills as well as an awareness of personal branding.
By being given presentations from lawyers in different areas of practice and stages of their career, I was able to gain an accurate insight into what work different practice areas entailed as well as the different expectations place on trainees and partners
The different lawyers I met during the insight day gave me a good idea of the company culture. Graduate recruitment also gave a presentation on debunking myths often associated with US law firms giving us a wider perspective into the general company culture found in US law firms.
The content of the day assisted me in finding out areas of practice in the legal sector that I would be particularly interested in and allowed me to find out how I could best develop my skills for those practice areas.
Everything Else
The firm provided reimbursement for travel expenses.
At the end of the day there was a networking event with members of graduate recruitment and lawyers working at the firm. The session before the networking event was a presentation on how to effectively network, which was useful.
I was able to meet a diverse range of lawyers working at the firm, including some lawyers working in the American offices. The members of the firm that I spoke with were very friendly and gave me useful advice.
The activities were not mentioned in the presentations during the day, but I was able to gain an insight into some activities that members of the firm engaged in by talking to lawyers at the networking session.
Yes, I would.
