    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The experience on the whole has enabled me to gain a deep understanding of like working for a global firm. Although at time I felt out of my comfort zone the support I had made up for this and helped to develop my professional nature. IBM has such a great working culture in all of the locations that I visited.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • During various reviews It came to light that I was not just another student but a member of the team and a key source for data. Although my team were based around Europe I felt I built a strong relationship with every member.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There is no shortage of support at IBM, not only from my supervisor and task manager but from the whole foundation community and on my team. Foundation are so supportive in helping to further my career and the team for my role enabled me to come to terms with the business and succeed in my Role. Especially when my task manager was off ill at the start of the year, support was always available to me.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It is difficult to assess this as it completely depends on the time of year, some weeks would be busy and other weeks were quieter which enables me to take part in other aspects of the business such as the education they have to offer. As far as daily tasks, I had set tasks which were often accompanied by the odd request from my colleagues.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Unfortunately close to the start of my placement my task manager became ill and so I was left manage a significant amount of the business area along with one other member of the team. This meant that I had to find my feet in the business quite quickly but also helped in building relationships with colleagues through leading weekly cadence conference calls. Also following an organization change it was left to me to restructure many of the key data sources.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have achieved are mainly creative problem solving, dealing with pressure and time management. Not only are these key competencies that will assist in achieving employment in the future but will also enable me to make the most of my time and skills in my final year at university and in completing my dissertation.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office that I was based at was one of the smallest in IBM UK. However the atmosphere was great and this did not prevent me from getting involved in location events. I also worked at some of the larger locations such as south bank where the atmosphere was almost quite literally buzzing with energy.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very organized, there was never a moment when I though What next? The foundation team are exceptional with their communications and guidance throughout the year. IBM has won numerous awards for their scheme and there is no question as to why.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • IBM is very supporting in helping you develop. After a 2 day training course for all students at the beginning of the placement that enabled us to settle in and become 'IBMers', there were ample opportunities for training and development. These include modules on presentation skills, self branding, self presentations and many other employment skills. As well as this there were opportunities to learn more about other aspects of IBM through lunch and learns and also education of various softwares at the click of a button such as excel, java and photoshop.
