About You
Thoroughly enjoyed the scheme and, more specifically, meeting, working and interacting with people at all levels of the firm and learning about their experiences.
Particularly appreciated the fact that our supervisors and mentors always had a task or job at hand - they never left us with nothing to do. Often, we were given tasks based around deals that they were actually working on, which certainly made you feel as if you were making a difference in some way.
Everyone, not just our supervisors and mentors, was willing to stop and take time in explaining any queries or tasks clearly. People were also happy to share their views and advice on more general things, such as applications, life at the firm, other firms etc.
Experience was extremely helpful in gaining a better understanding of the work, demands, and expectations of a trainee at a top international, commercial firm, which will prove invaluable in the future.
The Company
Extremely well structured. Everyone was given a timetable with dates and times of all the scheme's activities, ranging from departmental talks to social events in the evening. Clearly, everything had been planned well in advance.
A generally relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It was clear that expectation within the firm is extremely high, however. In this respect, I thought the firm had a good balance of high expectation within a supportive, non-hierarchical environment. Definitely sensed that the smaller office lends itself to a more collaborative atmosphere.
Significantly - the appointment of a mentor and a supervisor to each person highlighted this.
Exposed you to the type of work and the day-to-day routine of the firm. Sitting in an office with a supervisor meant that you got a sense of what it was like to work there on a day-to-day basis.
Certainly got a sense of a collegiate culture within the firm. The social events certainly helped in this respect, as they provided lots of opportunities to mix and socialise with people from across the firm.
Everything Else
Several opportunities - had a social or event almost every day.
Extremely enjoyable and useful for gaining a better understanding of the firm's culture. Was a great way to get to know not only the people on your scheme but also employees of the firm.
Briefly discussed pro-bono opportunities and the sports teams available.
Absolutely. The two weeks were busy and challenging, but also thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone I met was extremely helpful and friendly and there is a real effort to get the best out of you in the two weeks. The experience gained will prove invaluable.
