    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I really enjoyed my time at Rolls-Royce. I was involved of a variety of different tasks and got to work on meaningful projects during my 10 weeks spent at the company.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that the work is was doing was very important and this was made clear to me on more than one occasion. I was able to accelerate the completion of a key piece of work and my colleagues were grateful for this.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My "buddy" was extremely friendly, helpful and approachable. I could go to him with any problems or questions I had or even just for a chat. I also found that there was support available within the management and they were very approachable too.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was broadly involved in two separate projects one for the first 5 weeks and then the other for the remaining 5. I found that I was extremely busy when working on the first task and there were always things to be getting on with. The second task was not as time pressured but there was still plenty to do.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As previously mentioned, I worked on a very important project whilst there which had a fast approaching deadline! It was emphasized that this was indeed a deadline and that it really had to be met.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned many things about teamwork, presentation skills, VBA and Excel. All of which I will use during my studies (some of them very often!).

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There were different parts of the office with different dynamics. In general the atmosphere was very friendly and everyone was helpful and approachable. No one made me feel like I was a burden if I asked for a little help or advice and this allowed me to be more productive.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Each department is responsible for organising work for their intern, This means that different people will report different experiences with regards to the work they were given, responsibilities etc. I was very luck with the department I was in with regards to the work that I was set. Some of my friends working in other parts of the company did not find that their department was as organised. In saying that, some departments even offered tours of some of the Rolls-Royce sites in Derby and said that this was a great experience.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As it was just a 10 week placement that I completed there was little opportunity for training. Colleagues were happy to help however and I completed some basic training using the Rolls-Royce online education tool called MyLearning.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was delighted to secure a place on the Finance Graduate Scheme and will be starting September 2015!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I must admit there was not much of a social scene with people from the office. Since all of the interns were staying together at Derby University halls however there was plenty of opportunity for doing things. We played Ultimate Frisbee at the park nearby, basketball and football. In addition we went out in Derby most weekends and witnessed the Derby nightlife!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I would say the cost was very reasonable. If I had had a car I could have done my shopping for cheaper at the Aldi nearby but I used Sainsbury's instead (worth it for the cookies!). Halls were pretty basic so I would say they were quote expensive for what you got. They were no more expensive than any other uni halls but with no en suites I thought they were asking a bit much.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Derby is an interesting place to go out! There are plenty of pubs, bars and clubs. We went to "Scream" most weekends at that seemed to be people's favourite!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a gym on site and a tennis club directly opposite my office. I joined the tennis club (6 grass courts and four hard courts) and got involved with league matches and club championships. As mentioned before we also played football, frisbee and basketball.
