    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Caterpillar Inc. I enjoyed the job and felt that I gained invaluable experience throughout the course of my placement year. A big positive with the placement was that the work varied throughout the year and as my knowledge increased I was given more difficult work to carry out which meant that I was continuously developing. It was also a very fun and friendly office based environment.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues and that the work that I carried out for them was appreciated. I was never treated as just a 'placement student' but part of the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given good support throughout my placement. My manager was always on hand to answer any questions I had and in her absence I would be able to ask another manager for guidance. Furthermore I had weekly 1-2-1 meetings with my manager which allowed me to address any issues I may have had as well as discuss my progress and future tasks/work.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I believe that I had a great balance in my workload, I was very rarely 'bored' within my role. I always had sufficient work to carry out, sometimes I would have to put on extra hours to complete certain tasks but this was not excessive and given that I enjoyed my job I did not mind doing so.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a good amount of responsibility at CAT. Once I had developed my skillset and had the ability to take on more challenging work I was given new tasks and projects to work on. I also had key roles within some facility wide projects which helped to develop my confidence working with management from different departments as well as my own. I felt that the work I carried out was making a difference which is important when completing a placement year.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed on placement directly correlate to my degree subject and allowed me to apply theory I had learnt within an academic context practically within the working environment. I feel far more prepared going into my 4th year as well as for starting a job after university.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was sent on courses to improve my skills as well as online training courses. I found a 2-day advanced excel course to be particularly helpful. The company was always keen to help develop my skillset.
