The Role
Worked in the lab for a large part of the placement working on important testing
This is a return placement so I already knew most people, but still felt valued as a colleague
Part time line manager so a fairly low level of interaction but didn't really need any more
A little bored at the beginning but definitely improved and had plenty to do for the most part
Again, this is a return to a company I've worked at before so a fair bit of responsibility but no more than I could handle
Not lots of skills learnt this particular time, but very useful lab skills picked up on previous placements here and also time management
The Company
Full time staff are generally chatty and fun to be around, and willing to help students
While work is generally planned for incoming students, delays from customers can result in periods with little work - could do with a contingency plan!
Provide basic safety and information handling as standard, with more training on longer placements
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Above 25 days holiday
Travel loan
Scholarship students are now guaranteed a job and summer students who fit in well and work hard are also likely to have good prospects
The Culture
For placement year students, yes definitely as they often share houses, less so for summer students who often commute some distance. There is a very good support network for all new starters
Close to London so pretty expensive overall, not a great deal in the local area so London is best option for nights out
As before, pretty poor in Orpington, head to London!
There are a fair few clubs depending on the site and the new starters group arranges a pub quiz night, plus trips to Science Museum lates and a few other thing's
