The Role
At the beginning of my placement I felt overwhelmed as I was thrown straight in at the deep end with a steep learning curve. However, as the days went buy and I become used to my role, I started to really enjoy my role. I got to interact with everyone from the shop floor guys to management. I was given various different projects to get involved in and challenged with an assortment of tasks.
I felt respected by every person I worked with. I felt like a valued member of the team and treated as though my opinion meant something. Whenever I had an issue there was always somebody who made themselves available to help.
During my placement my supervisor was promoted to my manager, despite this he still managed to support me wherever he could. At first I was reluctant to approach management when I was struggling, this was a mistake in my judgement. Provided I showed that I was trying my best I was given the guidance I needed.
Particularly in my first half of the year when I was learning new things daily, I was really busy and didn't have time to get bored. As I got used to things I did find that I had the odd moment to mself. I never really found myself getting bored though as my supervisor always noticed when I wasn't particularly busy. The times when this happened I found I was given a rather interesting project to get involved in.
The placement that I undertook was an actual job role and I was given real world responsibility. As I was treated like a real member of the time I was given the opportunity to make important decisions in my role.
I feel as though I've learnt a lot of interpersonal skills which will help me in my future career. My biggest achievement this year has probably been my increase in confidence. As well as all this I've gained a great experience of what it is like work in such a fast pace industry.
The Company
There were a variety of personalities in my office and I enjoyed the company of each one. When work got serious everyone was very respectful of your need to get on with things. However, it was still a nice and relaxed atmosphere where people were friendly with one another.
I found that at the beginning of my placement, things were a bit hectic and it was just a case of trying to learn what I could as I went along. But it was obvious that certain parts of my job role were considered more important and therefore other aspects were left to fall behind. However, I was soon assigned help to get me up to date on all aspects of my role and things became much better organised.
Within my department I feel as though I was encouraged to develop as much as I could and was given any opportunities that were available to me. Although I do feel that some undergraduates were given much more training and chances to develop on their skills than others.

Due to the fact that I felt so at home within my unit, I would certainly consider the prospect of returning to work for Vauxhall. If I had been offered a job at the end of my placement I would have more than likely accepted it.
The Culture
As there were about 18 undergraduates and a fair few apprentices, we took it upon ourselves to try and regularly socialise outside of work, whether it was nights out, meals, film nights etc. Almost every week we arranged something to do for anyone that had the time available.
As I chose to live in Chester and not Ellesmere port, where Vauxhall was situated, things were a little bit more expensive when it came to living and socialising. However, we did have a very modern and stylish flat.
There are plenty of places within Chester to go and have a drink. I wouldn't say it's exactly the place to go clubbing, but there are certainly some ncie bars. Although, Liverpool is only a short ride away and that is an amazing night out.
The paint unit has a couple of nights out organised so that we could all socialise outside of work. There was also some team building activies organised outside of work.
