    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved the job and my responsibilities, but I found working with the boss very difficult because he was closed-minded and unhelpful.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My co-workers and boss appreciated my work a lot, but at the same time, my boss didn't let me work off of my own initiative - I had to follow exactly what he wanted.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My boss didn't provide me with much guidance or support, he just told me the job, let me get on with it, and checked my final result.

    2/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I worked from 10am to 6pm with a half hour lunch break every weekday. I planned on using some spare time to get some university work done, but I found that pretty much impossible because of how much work I had to do.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the important job of being an International Model Booker. This was a promotion from my original role as an Events Organiser because I worked so reliably. I had a lot of responsibility as I had to work with clients around the globe, from America to Morocco to Belgium and I had to be proficient in English, German and French. It was demanding, but I loved it. The worst part was that I had to work in model recruitment as well, and my boss didn't appreciate my opinion in that area.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt many skills, from time-keeping to communication skills to organisation and patience as well as skills needed only for the Model Booker job. I now know what it's like to work under someone's thumb while still needing to spread to get the job done. It was incredibly hard work, but it has prepared me for a real job in future and I am grateful in that respect.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Most of my co-workers gradually grew unhappy because our boss mislead them in recruitment because he said that they would receive more pay than they (we) did. However, we all worked well together and helped each other get through the 3-6 months internship that we had.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My boss recruited people for jobs that he didn't have available, and switched their jobs round during placement because he pleased. It was badly organised and stopped people from becoming proficient in their area of work.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I don't believe that they invested in me much. In my view, it seemed more like they stuck me in the middle of the work and got me to do the job of a proper employee, but more for their benefit than mine. I was offered a permanent job in the future, but I think that was more because I was good at my job rather than their policy. Most of my co-workers were forgotten at the end of their internship.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Not very. As said, I enjoyed the job greatly and would love to becoming a Model Booker by profession in future, but not with their company. They were disorganised and spoke about the models as if they were objects to which they could do as they pleased. None of my co-workers said that they would like to take up a job with them either.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We worked well together in the office, we joked about and had fun together, but none of us met outside of work.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area in which I worked was very expensive. I was lucky because it was close to where I lived at the time, so I didn't have to pay extra for living costs, but it must've been very difficult for people who had moved there especially for the job.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I don't go out at night, but I have been told that the nightlife was very good.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Our boss didn't mention any outside activities, so if we didn't find out about them ourselves we wouldn't have thought there were any. As it was, there was nothing that the company offered, and those activities that there were were generally out of our price range.
