    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The last year has been great. Everyone at Cognito is really friendly and helpful and I have felt like a real part of the team.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like I was part of the team and took work from the sprint like everyone else. Help was always available when needed though. There are a few nights out from just drinks to go-karting. Also every friday we went to the pub for lunch for massive burgers.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I had a problem another member of the team was always there to help

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always something that needed doing, but I never felt under a large amount of pressure.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From week one I was making changes to the main code base (with guidance) but I was never on my own.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Experience gained in use of source control with a team, issue tracking, working with low level C code and eating massive burgers.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We moved in to a new office in February 2014, so everything is bright and shiney. On the dev side of the office, it was really relaxed in terms of dress code and general atmosphere. On the customer facing side everyone wears a shirt, but even then the general vibe is a good one.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was like being was employed like everyone else but with more support. There are four or five placement students each year and have been for a while now. They know how to do it.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was no set training, but I feel that I learned loads just from day to day activities.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Most placement students get offered to go back as a graduate.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Every lunch we met up and played pool until we moved office. Then we met up and played table football. We also met up now and then out of work.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Newbury isn't the cheapest place in the world, but it's not that bad.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are pubs in Newbury and maybe some night clubs? I've heard it's not all that great. I think Newbury is more about the daylife. There's usually some kind of event in town at the weekends and there are a surprisingly good selection of shops.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I helped out with the CHIPS challenge which involved going into schools once a week to help students build Lego robots to complete some challenges. The final event where the different schools competed turned out to be a really successful event.

    3/5
