    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Given a good level of responsibility and ownership. Excellent opportunities given.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by all IBM staff and especially by my team members.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Good support given when sought out however sometimes lacked the appropriate support as the team you are in has a lot of responsibilities of their own. The Foundation scheme that Interns are on is a good way to over come this as you receive a professional development manager.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I found the IBM flexibility good and was kept busy. However I did see less busy moments during the summer period but this was due to my role in Marketing...most of the Marketing roles are slightly quieter around the summer period.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A good level of responsibility given for a placement student. Enough to feel you had ownership but good support available if required.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt a wide variety of skills that are extremely useful for my final year but also my future career. These skills are only learnt in a practical environment.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A good balance within the teams. The intern atmosphere during breaks is extremely good.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Foundation community were very good and efficient with the set up of the placement. Some hurdles to overcome during the handover phase at the beginning but once you begin to learn the role yourself things become easier.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have had access to online learning and was able to go to any training days I felt would help me develop. This is one way that the professional development managers have been extremely helpful as they have a keen interest in developing you as an individual.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am definitely applying back to IBM for the Graduate Scheme. However they do have limited roles that they offer. Roles such as Marketing, HR and Finance are not offered for Graduates. The main roles available to Graduates are in Sales and Consultancy. There are opportunities to shadow Graduates in these roles to gain a better understanding of your suitability.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are around 80 placement students based in my location: South Bank. There are a lot of opportunities to meet new people and get involved in a social scene with them. IBM Foundation set up a Facebook group for new interns which is really useful.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was based in South Bank, Central London so the cost of living and socialising was expensive! However, IBM provide their placement students who are based in central London with a London living allowance to cover these costs.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London nightlife was right on our door. Really accessible and an incredible option available.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • IBM is very committed to its CSR policy.. this is know as their 'Giveback' scheme. There are numerous opportunities to get involved with activities outside your role but also outside of work. Such as going into the local community and helping to support a project.
