The Role
NATS is an enjoyable place to work, there is plenty to stimulate your brain and it has a very friendly and pleasant atmosphere.
My collegues and team have been very supportive and complimentary of all work that I have completed, and I feel that I have made a valuable contribution to various projects.
I have been given plenty of support in my work, there is always somebody knowledgeable around for me to ask questions about my work/ ATC industry/ applications etc.
My work load varied on my placement, the start of the month being the busiest time due to reporting dates and deadlines. When there is alot to do, there is help available to prioritize tasks.
I have been responsible for managing my own work and I feel that I have had the correct balance of guidance and free-rein. I have been treated like a 'normal' employee - i.e. not 'just' a placement student.
My analytical skills have definitely been developed, and also my Excel/Access and ICT skills and knowledge. This will help me with my degree in formal report and dissertation writing. The main benefit, I feel, will be after I graduate, to have the invaluble experience from working for an international company for a period of time and the professional skills that I have gained.
The Company
Enjoyable, friendly atmosphere. Lots of people to chat to (but also quiet enough to get on with work)
The DEG (direct entry graduate) and IP (industrial placement) scheme is very well organised across the business, with accredited schemes and various development opportunities. In my particular department (Safety) I was the first IP, despite this, I feel that I settled into the role quite quickly even without having somebody to 'take over' from.
I have participated in various training courses (e.g. BI, LIM/IPOC) and through my one-to-ones with my manager have been able to express any areas that I would like to train/develop my skills in.

The placement year has been described as a 'year-long interview'. If a job were to be available I believe the placement year puts you at a great advantage when applying, some departments have dedicated graduate schemes for people coming out of university.
The Culture
I moved 200+miles to Hampshire where my placement is, and have made many friends here (fellow students, collegues). Effort is made to integrate all of the students many activities are arranged, such as BBQs/activities/nights out.
I find Hampshire quite expensive but that's because I'm from the Midlands where cost of living is cheaper. This is reflected in a higher salary though.
There are various pubs around Whiteley for an after-work drink. Portsmouth and Southampton are good for nightlife, so it is easier to get involved in such activities if you live in one of these places.
Lots of oppourtunities for out of work activities and variety of things to do in the surrounding areas.
