    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found working at IBM a brilliant opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed my placement. Before starting my placement I wanted to develop both presentation skills and networking and I can confirm that I was able to develop both throughout my time at IBM and have found this experience to have been very valuable.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I had two managers within in my role and both were fantastic. They demonstrated passion about their area of focus and about IBM. Throughout my year, they gave me a lot of support in both the role and allowing me to work on larger projects, which in turn allowed me to take responsibility for some major areas of the business.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • IBM provides each student with both a Project Development Manager and a mentor. In addition to this when I was looking at the potential Graduate roles to apply to there were multiple graduates who were happy to offer both help and advice on what choices to make.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My role was continually busy; I personally found this great as no two days where the same and this allowed me to expand my network.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my placement, my responsibility developed throughout, starting with managing the UK's social media accounts and developing to managing the content used across all EU social media accounts. In addition to my role, I was also given the opportunity to manager the internal referral program from Ireland.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am finding that the soft skills I have developed over the year have already impacted my studies and I feel much more comfortable entering the world of work once I have graduated.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a fantastic balance of both fun and work, due to the layout you were able to sit with your team or friends and able to socialise whilst working.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The two day induction that all Industrial Placement Students experience offered a great insight into IBM's culture and what to expect for the next 12 months. The PDM which each student was assigned made sure to do regular checkup for both assessing your progress and to see how you were personally getting on.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • IBM offer multiple online courses that you can get involved in and multiple 'lunch and learn' sessions to develop your knowledge in certain areas. However it in some cases it is very much that you much be proactive to find out about some of the opportunities.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • You are not guaranteed a graduate role with IBM however I have already submitted my application.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As mentioned before there is a large student and graduate base which means that there are many social aspects as well as working. For example we had a Christmas Party where all the Industrial Placements attended.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in London is expensive but that isn't really a suprise. Your wage allows your to afford rent, living and you are still able to socialise!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again London is expensive compared to the usual student night prices but its worth the cost!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • IBM are part of the coorporate games and have multiple sports teams that you can get involved with. Also some students and graduates had made their own teams which would play against one another.

    5/5
