    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Hiscox is a great place to be an intern. Having never before gained any experience in an office setting, it was the perfect environment to learn and develop, whilst also being sociable and challenging.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There was a great atmosphere in the London office. Although I was only there for eight weeks, I felt a valued member of the team and have since kept in touch with a number of colleagues.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support from high level management, whilst also being able to ask for advice from current graduates. I always felt that I could ask for guidance when needed, people were always happy to help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was assigned numerous individual projects, ranging from writing blogs to working on the current customer content on the website. As an intern group, we were also given a group project, which we presented to the Senior Leadership Group at the end of our time at Hiscox.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It was my responsibility to deliver projects on time and to a high standard. I was trusted to attend meetings and was always encouraged to enter into discussions and put my own ideas forward.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt so much from my internship this summer. I have learnt how to prioritise and balance my time; deciding which projects deserved more immediate attention. I was also able to develop my communication and presentation skills, completing various presentation skills courses and workshops, organised by Hiscox as part of the internship. In addition, training in using Excel was very useful and something which I think will be helpful in the future. My internship gave me an insight into working in a professional office environment and helped me develop the confidence to engage and work alongside people from all areas of the business.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was part of the marketing team during my internship. There was a great atmosphere within this sector of the business, we were encouraged to be collaborative and to talk through new ideas with our colleagues. There was a definite sense of teamwork in the office, people from a number of different departments would regularly meet to discuss projects. I was made to feel welcome from day one.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of the internship was great. As a group of interns some of us did have different start dates, which was unfortunate but could not really be helped. The structure of my marketing internship was very well thought out and planned, however, it was flexible in the sense that I had the opportunity to spend more time working on the things that most interested me. There could have been more interaction organised between current graduates and interns.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As part of the internship we were given training in Excel, as well as the option of attending two presentation workshops, which were both extremely useful. Whilst the first workshop focussed on things such as voice projection and body language, the second was more directed towards how to deliver a business presentation and included tips on producing professional looking PowerPoint slides.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely consider joining Hiscox in the future, were a position to become available. I think it would a great place to start your career.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was lucky to have a great group on interns during my time at Hiscox. In addition to drinks and a dinner organised by Hiscox, we also organised various other nights out as a group and are still in touch.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was quite expensive to live and socialise in the area. However, the Art Cafe, in Hiscox, did offer good food at lower prices.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were some great bars and pubs near the office, where we often went for drinks after work in the evenings.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was the opportunity to got or drinks after work, but during my eight weeks at Hiscox there were not really any other opportunities to be involved in activities outside of work.
